Ordering from a tailor by WhatsApp or Instagram message

How to order from a tailor on WhatsApp or Instagram safely: keep one thread, get a written quote before any payment, save a copy, and know when a form is better.

Possible, with three habits

You can order from a tailor through WhatsApp or Instagram messages, and plenty of small makers work that way. To keep it safe, hold the whole order in one thread, get a written quote before paying anything, and keep your own copy of what was agreed outside the app.

Chat is quick and friendly, which is its strength and its weakness. Details agreed in a passing message are easy to lose, and nobody scrolls back through three weeks of voice notes to check a sleeve length.

Why chat orders go wrong

Most problems with message orders are not dishonesty. They are memory.

  • Details scattered over days. The neckline is in one message, the length in another and the colour change in a voice note.
  • Several people replying. A business account may be answered by different people, each seeing only part of the conversation.
  • Edited or deleted messages. A message can be changed after you read it, and disappearing messages remove the record altogether.
  • Pictures without words. Ten screenshots and the words “like this” leave the tailor to guess which detail you meant.
  • A price with nothing attached. A figure in a chat bubble does not say what it covers, or whether delivery and charges at your end are included.

One thread, one quote, one copy

Keep every message about the order in a single conversation, and start a new thread for a new order. When the details are settled, ask for them back as one written quote: the design, the fabric, your measurements, the total, what the total includes, the making time and the terms for cancelling and faults. Read it against your notes before paying anything at all.

Then keep your own copy. Save the quote as a document or a screenshot, and email it to yourself so it survives a lost phone or a closed account. If your measurements were sent as a photo of a notebook page, type them out as well. Our checklist of what a written quote should include is useful here, whoever you order from.

Checking an Instagram boutique before you pay

An attractive feed proves only that someone can take or collect good pictures. Before paying, ask whose photos they are, ask for a daylight photo of the actual fabric, and find out where the clothes are made and who pays any import charges at your end. Pay by a method that leaves a record, and ask your bank or card provider what protection, if any, it carries. Our wider guide to choosing between online tailoring and a tailor nearby covers the trade-offs of ordering at a distance.

When a form is the better start

Chat suits quick questions. A form suits orders with a lot of detail: a full set of measurements, several reference pictures, a fabric you are sending yourself. It asks for everything once, in order, so nothing depends on memory.

That is how we work. An order starts on the quote form, which asks for your name, email, country, city, the garment, quantity, service option, design images and notes, with measurements in centimetres or inches. From that we send a written quote, and that quote is the record you approve. See our custom stitching service for how the rest of an order runs.

Common questions

Is it safe to order from an Instagram boutique?

It can be, when the seller gives you a written quote, clear terms and honest answers about whose photos they use before you pay. Pressure to pay quickly, or a refusal to put anything in writing, is a reason to stop.

Can I send my measurements as a voice note?

It is better not to. Spoken numbers are easy to mishear and hard to check later. Type them, say whether they are inches or centimetres, and ask for them to be repeated back in the quote.

Should I pay a deposit by message?

Only once you hold a written quote that says what the payment is for and what happens if the order is cancelled. A payment request with no quote behind it leaves you nothing to point to later.
