Rent an outfit or have one made for a single event?
Rent or buy an outfit for a wedding? Renting, buying ready made and having one made to measure compared for a guest, by fit, re-wear and how far ahead to plan.
InspirationIt depends on whether you will wear it again
Rent if the outfit is so specific to one event that you will never wear it twice. Buy ready made if you need it soon and fit standard sizes. Have it made if fit matters to you and you can picture wearing it again, or can design it so you will. For most guests, the question of re-wear settles it.
The three routes also differ in what they ask of you in advance, and that can matter as much as the outfit itself.
Renting: one night, someone else’s size
Rental works best for very formal, heavily worked pieces you would otherwise keep in a cupboard. You borrow something grander than you might buy, wear it once and send it back.
- Fit: rental pieces come in set sizes and are worn by many people, so expect pins, clips or a little looseness.
- Choice: limited to what is available on your dates, and South Asian formal wear is not stocked by every rental service.
- Care: spills and tears can cost you, which is a worry at a dinner with dancing.
- Timing: you receive it shortly before the event and return it soon after, so a delay or a poor fit leaves little room to change course.
Buying ready made: quick, if the sizes suit you
Ready-made formal wear is the fastest route. You see the finished piece, and if you fit a standard size it may need nothing done. It is less satisfying when you sit between sizes, are tall or petite, or want a sleeve or neckline the shops are not selling that season. Altering a heavily embellished piece can also be difficult, as borders and embroidery limit what can move.
Having it made: fit and re-wear, with some planning
Made to measure suits a guest who wants the outfit to fit properly and to earn its place in the wardrobe afterwards. You choose the fabric weight, the embroidery level and the details, so you can plan for a second life from the start.
It needs time. With us, making takes 5 to 7 working days from your approved quote and full payment, then shipping time on top, which varies by destination. Our article on planning ahead for made to measure shows how to work back from the event date.
Designing one outfit for several events
If you choose to have something made, a few choices make it easier to wear again. Our guide to Pakistani wedding guest outfits for every event helps you match the level of dress to each function.
- A mid-weight embroidery level, so it suits a dinner as well as a wedding function.
- A separate dupatta and trousers, which can be swapped to change the look.
- A colour you already wear, so the pieces mix with what you own.
- A length and cut you like on ordinary days, not only for photographs.
- Fabric that suits your climate, so it is not limited to one season.
If you decide to have it made
Send us your idea or a reference photo through custom stitching, with the event date and how you hope to wear it afterwards. We confirm the fabric, embroidery and details in a written quote, and nothing is paid until you approve it. Ideas for a lasting set are in our capsule wardrobe guide. Start your quote when you are ready.
Common questions
Is it rude to rent an outfit for a wedding?
No. What you wear matters far more than how you came by it. Hosts care that guests are comfortable and dressed for the occasion.
When is renting clearly the better choice?
When the outfit is far grander than anything you would wear again, when you need it at short notice, or when you only want to try a style once.
Can a made-to-measure outfit be worn to both a mehndi and a walima?
Often, with planning. Choose a colour and embroidery level that suits both, and change the dupatta or jewellery between events to shift the mood.
