Two-piece vs three-piece unstitched suits: which should you buy?

What one, two and three-piece unstitched suits include, when a two-piece is the smarter buy, and how to add a dupatta or trousers later without a mismatch.

What the piece count means

Pakistani and Indian unstitched suits are sold by the number of pieces in the pack, and the count tells you how much of the outfit you are getting. A three-piece has fabric for a kameez, trousers and a dupatta. A one-piece is the kameez fabric alone, usually called a shirt. The two-piece is the one to read carefully: depending on the brand and the design, it can be a kameez and trousers or a kameez and dupatta.

So before you compare prices, check the listing or label for the actual pieces and their lengths. Our guide to reading an unstitched suit label walks through it, and stitched vs unstitched covers what unstitched means in the first place.

When a three-piece is worth it

A three-piece usually costs more, but it gives you a complete, matched outfit in one purchase. It tends to be the better choice when:

  • The dupatta is part of the design: in many printed and embroidered collections the dupatta is made to go with that kameez, and a substitute rarely looks as good.
  • It is for Eid or a gathering: chiffon, organza and embroidered dupattas carry much of the occasion feel. Our Eid ideas show how.
  • You want less shopping around: finding a dupatta or trouser fabric in exactly the right shade can take longer than you expect.
  • It is a gift: a complete suit is easier to give, and she can decide how to wear it. See gifting an unstitched suit.

When a two-piece is the smarter buy

For everyday wear, a two-piece is often the more practical buy. It is worth considering in these situations.

  • You already own dupattas: a few plain dupattas in black, white, beige and two or three colours go with a surprising number of printed kameez.
  • You rarely wear a dupatta day to day: at work, on the school run or with a scarf or hijab, a kameez and trousers may be all you use.
  • Hot weather: an outfit without a dupatta is lighter and cooler in summer.
  • A co-ord look: kameez and trousers in the same print make a modern set. Our co-ord guide has ideas.
  • A shirt and dupatta two-piece: useful if you have plain trousers or cigarette pants you wear with everything.
  • A one-piece: the simplest option for a kurta to wear with jeans or trousers you already own.

Filling in the missing piece

If you buy a two-piece and later want a full outfit, the missing piece rarely needs to match exactly. A plain dupatta or plain trousers in a colour picked from the print usually looks deliberate rather than added later. Take the kameez fabric with you, or compare colours in daylight, because shop lighting and screens both mislead. Our guide to matching dupatta and trouser colours goes into detail.

Some brands also sell single trouser pieces or dupattas on their own, and plain fabric by the metre works well for trousers; see buying fabric by the metre. If you would rather not hunt for it, ask in your quote request whether we can supply a suitable plain piece; anything we supply is agreed in your written quote.

Getting either one stitched

Stitching a two-piece or a three-piece works the same way: you choose the neckline, sleeves, kameez length and trouser style, and the suit is cut to your measurements. Tell us which pieces you have and which you want stitched. A dupatta only needs to come with the suit if you want its edges finished or matched to the kameez.

If you are buying several suits for the season, they can be quoted as one order with one set of measurements, then posted together once we have confirmed the fabric and how to send it. Start on the unstitched suit stitching page or go straight to the stitching quote.

Common questions

Is a two-piece suit a kameez and trousers or a kameez and dupatta?

It can be either, depending on the brand and the design. Check the listing or the label for the pieces and their lengths before you buy, so you know whether you will need trousers or a dupatta to complete the outfit.

Can I buy a dupatta separately to turn a two-piece into a three-piece?

Yes. Plain and printed dupattas are widely sold on their own, and a plain chiffon or lawn dupatta in a colour taken from the kameez print usually looks deliberate rather than added later.

Is a three-piece better value than a two-piece?

Only if you will wear the dupatta. If you would use it, a three-piece gives you a matched outfit in one purchase; if you already own dupattas that go with it, a two-piece often gives the same look for less.
