What colours go with grey?
What colours go with grey? Pairings for light, mid and charcoal grey, the pastels and brights that stop grey looking flat, and dupatta ideas for a grey suit.
InspirationAlmost everything, but the shade decides
Grey goes with almost every colour, but the shade decides which partners look best. Light grey is softest with pastels such as blush pink, powder blue, lilac and mint. Mid grey comes alive with yellow, mustard, coral and teal. Charcoal behaves like a gentler black, so it takes white, ivory, burgundy, emerald and bright pink well.
Grey’s one weakness is that it can look flat when everything around it is equally muted. The fix is nearly always a single clear colour, or a clear step between light and dark, somewhere in the outfit.
Greys also lean warm or cool. A warm grey with a hint of beige, often sold as stone or greige, sits better with cream, camel, rust and gold. A cool grey with a blue tint prefers white, silver, navy and icy pastels. Holding the fabric next to a sheet of white paper makes the lean easier to see.
Light grey: soft and summery
Pale grey, sometimes sold as silver or ash, is a summer neutral that looks fresh in lawn and cotton. Because it is so light, it can fade into the background, so give it a partner with some colour:
- Blush or rose pink. The classic pairing, gentle and pretty for daytime gatherings.
- Powder blue. Cool and calm; a touch of white keeps it crisp.
- Lilac. Soft and slightly unexpected, lovely as a dupatta.
- Mint. Fresh for spring, especially with white trousers.
- Navy. For contrast: navy trousers or a navy border make light grey look sharper and more grown-up.
Mid grey: the everyday base
Mid grey, the shade of a classic marl or slate, is one of the easiest work neutrals. On its own it can look a little institutional, so it wants warmth or brightness nearby:
- Yellow and mustard. The liveliest pairing. A mustard dupatta over a grey kurta is a familiar combination for good reason.
- Coral and peach. Warm and friendly, and pleasant near the face.
- Teal and emerald. Rich without being loud, which makes them good for work.
- White. Simple and clean, especially in summer.
- Burgundy. The deeper, autumn version of the same idea.
Charcoal: a softer black
Charcoal can stand in wherever you would wear black, with a slightly gentler effect. It works with white and ivory for crisp contrast, with burgundy, emerald, sapphire and plum for winter and evenings, and with hot pink or fuchsia for a bold party look. Silver thread looks elegant on charcoal, while gold reads warmer and more festive. In winter fabrics such as khaddar, a charcoal suit with a jewel-coloured shawl is a dependable cold-weather outfit.
Choosing a dupatta for a grey suit
The dupatta is the quickest way to add colour to grey. Three approaches work: a pastel for softness (pink, lilac or mint on light grey), a bright for energy (mustard, coral or fuchsia on mid grey and charcoal), or a print that contains the grey plus one other colour, which ties the whole outfit together. Our article on matching dupatta and trouser colours explains the general method.
Grey on grey works too, provided the shades are clearly different, such as a pale grey kameez with charcoal trousers, and there is some texture, such as a slub or a woven pattern. Our guide to tonal dressing shows how to keep a one-colour outfit from looking dull.
Ordering a grey outfit
Grey varies enormously between sellers and screens: one shop’s silver is another’s ash, and a warm grey can look beige under some lights. When you order through Fabric + Stitching, send a photo or swatch reference of the grey you want, plus the colours you plan to pair it with, when you request a quote. The fabric and colour are agreed in your written quote before cutting.
Common questions
Can you wear grey with black?
Yes. Charcoal with black looks sleek and modern, and light grey with black gives a stronger contrast. Add one light or bright colour, such as white or pink, so the outfit does not feel heavy.
Does grey go with brown or beige?
Warm greys do. A stone or greige shade sits comfortably with camel, tan and cream. Cool, blue-tinted greys usually look better with navy, white and silver.
What colour shoes go with a grey outfit?
Black, white, silver and nude shades are all safe. For a lift, repeat the accent colour from the dupatta or the embroidery.
