What colours go with mustard yellow?

What colours go with mustard? Navy, white, grey, olive and deep reds, with suit and dupatta combinations and how to wear mustard away from your face.

Mustard’s easiest partners

Mustard yellow goes well with navy, white, grey, olive and deeper reds such as maroon and rust, and it also sits comfortably with denim blue, teal and black. Navy is the most reliable partner: blue and yellow sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, so a dark navy makes mustard look warmer and the mustard makes navy look richer.

Mustard is a yellow with brown in it, which is why it feels earthy rather than sunny. That brown note is the key to pairing it. Colours that also have a muted, slightly earthy quality look calm next to it; very cold, bright colours such as icy pink or electric blue tend to fight it.

  • Navy. Smart and grown-up. A mustard kameez with navy trousers works for work and for gatherings.
  • White and ivory. Fresh and summery. Ivory is softer than pure white and blends more easily with mustard’s warmth.
  • Grey. Cools mustard down. Charcoal is sharp; light grey gives a gentle, quiet look.
  • Olive and khaki. An all-earthy combination that suits autumn fabrics such as khaddar.
  • Maroon, burgundy and rust. Rich and festive. Good for Eid and dinners.
  • Teal. A bolder contrast that still feels balanced.
  • Black. Strong and graphic. Keep the mustard as the larger area so the outfit does not look heavy.

Putting mustard into a three-piece suit

In a kameez, trousers and dupatta, mustard can be the main colour or the accent. As the main colour, a mustard kameez with navy or white trousers and a printed dupatta that picks up both is easy to get right. As an accent, a plain navy, olive or grey kameez with a mustard dupatta brings the colour in without much commitment.

For a mustard suit, the dupatta question usually comes down to three choices. A matching mustard dupatta gives a calm, tonal look. A contrasting one in navy, maroon or teal makes the outfit livelier. A printed or embroidered dupatta that contains mustard ties everything together. Our guide to matching dupatta and trouser colours explains how to weigh the three pieces against each other, and pairing printed and plain pieces helps when one of them is patterned.

If mustard near your face does not feel right

Some people love mustard close to the face; others feel it makes them look tired or flat in photos. There is no rule about who can wear it, and how a colour looks depends on light, fabric and your own taste. If you are in the second group, you do not have to give it up. Move it further down.

  • Wear mustard trousers or a mustard shalwar with a navy, white or grey kameez.
  • Choose a kameez in another colour and drape a mustard dupatta over one shoulder rather than around the neck.
  • Ask for the neckline area in a contrast colour, for example a navy band or piping at the neck of a mustard kameez.
  • Pick a print where mustard is one colour among several, so it is broken up near the face.
  • If you cover your hair, a scarf in ivory, grey or navy separates mustard from your face.

Mustard, ochre or haldi: naming the shade

The same shade can be sold as mustard, ochre, turmeric, haldi or dark yellow, and sellers use the names loosely. Screens also shift yellows a great deal. When you order, send a photo of the exact colour you want, or a link to a fabric or garment that shows it, rather than relying on the word. Our article on choosing colours and prints for a custom design has more on describing colour, and the gentle guide to colours that suit you covers how to test shades at home.

With Fabric + Stitching, the fabric and colour are agreed in your written quote before anything is cut. A small difference in shade between a photo and the real fabric is normal. Start with the quote form and attach your colour reference.

Common questions

Does mustard go with black?

Yes. Mustard and black make a bold, graphic pair. Let mustard take the larger share, for example a mustard kameez with black trousers, because a mostly black outfit with a little mustard can look heavy.

What dupatta goes with a mustard suit?

A navy, maroon or teal dupatta gives a clear contrast. A mustard dupatta gives a tonal look. A printed dupatta that includes mustard and one of those darker colours is the easiest way to join the pieces.

Is mustard a summer or winter colour?

It works in both. In summer, pair it with white and light fabrics such as lawn. In autumn and winter, pair it with olive, rust, maroon or charcoal in heavier fabrics such as khaddar or karandi.
