The Gilded Seam: Custom Women’s Stitching

What does custom stitching mean on a Pakistani suit?

Custom stitching meaning, explained: the stitching add-on many shops sell with their own suits, how it differs from a made-to-measure service, and what to ask first.

Two meanings behind one phrase

On a Pakistani suit, custom stitching usually means one of two things. At an online shop’s checkout it is an add-on: you buy an unstitched suit from that shop’s range and pay extra to have it sewn, typically to a short list of your measurements or to a standard size. From a tailoring service it means made to measure: the design, the fabric and every measurement are agreed with you in writing before anything is cut.

Both are legitimate, and both can produce a suit you love. They are different amounts of service, though, and knowing which one you are looking at prevents most surprises.

Custom stitching as a shop add-on

Many shops that sell unstitched suits will also stitch them. The appeal is obvious: one order, one parcel, and the suit arrives ready to wear. If the catalogue look is what you want and the form asks for the numbers that matter on your body, this route is convenient and can work very well. What varies from shop to shop is how custom the stitching really is, so read four things closely.

  • The fabric is a suit from that shop’s own range. Fabric bought elsewhere is not usually accepted.
  • The design tends to follow the catalogue photo, sometimes with a choice of trouser style or sleeve length.
  • The measurements range from a standard size, to a size plus your preferred lengths, to a fuller form. Check which one applies.
  • The agreement is normally the order form itself; there may be no separate summary to approve.

Custom stitching as a made-to-measure service

Here the stitching is the product, not an extra. You bring the fabric or ask the tailor to supply it, you decide the design, and the piece is cut to your full set of measurements. With us that is custom stitching in two forms: Stitching Only, where you send an unstitched suit you already own, from any source, after we have confirmed it is suitable, and Fabric + Stitching, where we supply the agreed fabric.

The written quote then records the design, the fabric, the measurements, the total and the making time, which is 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment and, on Stitching Only, from your fabric reaching us in Pakistan.

The two side by side

In each line below, the shop add-on comes first and the made-to-measure service second.

  • Whose fabric: the shop’s own suit, against yours or the tailor’s.
  • Whose design: mostly the catalogue’s, against whatever you specify: neckline, sleeves, length, trousers, lining.
  • How many measurements: anything from a size to a handful, against a full set including shoulder, armhole and sleeve.
  • What is in writing: an order confirmation, against a quote you approve before cutting.
  • Parcels: one, against two stages when you send your own fabric first.
  • Who it suits: someone with standard proportions who likes the suit as shown, against someone between sizes, tall, petite or particular about details.

Questions to ask before you tick the stitching box

Six questions show how much service sits behind the checkbox.

  • Which measurements will you actually use: all of mine, or a size?
  • Can I change the neckline, sleeve length or kameez length from the photo?
  • Is lining included, and for which pieces?
  • How are the embroidered neckline and border pieces placed if I change the length?
  • Will you confirm the details back to me before cutting?
  • What happens if the suit does not match what I ordered?

If the answers are thin

A shop that answers these clearly is giving you something close to made to measure, whatever it is called. If the replies are vague and your proportions are hard to dress from a chart, buying the suit unstitched and having it made to measure is the safer path. Our guides to brand size charts vs made to measure and what an unstitched set means go further, and a Stitching Only quote starts with photos of your fabric.

Common questions

Is a custom stitched suit the same as made to measure?

Sometimes. It depends on how many of your measurements are used and whether you can change the design. A suit sewn to a standard size with your chosen length is custom stitched but not fully made to measure.

Can I have a suit from any brand custom stitched?

With a made-to-measure service, yes, provided the fabric is suitable and there is enough for your design. With us you send photos first and we confirm before you post the fabric to Pakistan. We have no partnership with any brand.

Does custom stitching include lining?

Not automatically. Some shops include it, some charge for it and some leave it out, so ask before ordering. With us, lining is one of the details agreed in your written quote.
