Can you wear lawn in winter? How to layer it
Can you wear lawn in winter? Yes, with a warm layer beneath and a shawl or cardigan over it. How to layer a lawn suit, and when to change to khaddar.
InspirationYes, if lawn is the middle layer
Yes, you can wear lawn in winter, provided you treat it as the middle of an outfit and not the whole of it: something warm underneath, the lawn suit over that, and a shawl, cardigan or coat on top. Lawn gives almost no warmth of its own, so the layers do the heating and the suit supplies the colour and print.
That makes lawn a sensible choice for mild winters, heated homes, offices and indoor gatherings. It stops being enough once you are outside for long in real cold, and at that point a heavier cloth is the simpler answer. Our pages on lawn and khaddar describe the two ends of that scale.
Why lawn feels cold
Lawn is a fine, smooth cotton woven from thin yarns. It is light, it lets air pass straight through and it lies close to the skin, which is exactly what you want in high summer. In midwinter the same qualities work against you. A thin cloth holds very little still air, and still air is what keeps a body warm. Cotton also holds on to moisture, so lawn that has caught a shower stays damp and chilly for a long time.
Winter cloths such as khaddar, karandi and marina are thicker and more textured, so they trap air between the yarns. Our comparison of lawn, cotton and khaddar explains the difference in more detail.
Layering a lawn suit, from the skin outwards
Build the outfit in this order, and take layers off as rooms warm up.
- A warm base: a thin thermal top with long sleeves, in a shade close to your skin or to the ground colour of the suit so that it does not show through. Thermal leggings or tights go under the trousers.
- The lawn suit: deeper colours and busy prints suit winter light and hide the layer beneath. Pale, plain lawn shows every seam of a thermal.
- A lining: a lined kameez is a little warmer, stops the base layer showing and keeps the lawn from clinging to it.
- Something over the body: a sleeveless waistcoat or a long cardigan warms your core while the sleeves and print stay on show.
- A proper shawl: many lawn suits come with a chiffon or lawn dupatta that adds nothing in the cold. Swap it for a wool or wool-blend shawl indoors, and add a coat outside.
- Warm feet: socks and closed shoes, with straight trousers that let in less draught than wide ones.
Having a lawn suit cut for cold months
If you know a suit will be worn through winter, say so before it is cut. Layers need room, and a kameez made to sit close over bare arms will pull at the armholes once a thermal is underneath.
With our Stitching Only service you send a lawn suit you already own, once we have confirmed it is suitable. Put the points below in the notes when you ask for a quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design.
- Ease: ask for a little extra room through the bust, upper arm and armhole. Our guide to how loose a kameez should be shows what the numbers mean.
- Sleeves and length: full sleeves and a knee or calf length cover more of you than short sleeves and a hip length.
- Lining: ask for the kameez to be lined, and the trousers too if the lawn is pale.
- Embroidery level: none or delicate. Raised work rubs against a cardigan and catches on knitwear.
- Trousers: straight trousers with enough room for leggings underneath.
When to leave lawn in the wardrobe
Layered lawn copes with a cool house, a heated office and a short walk to the car. It does not cope with an hour at a bus stop near freezing, a windy outdoor event, snow, or an unheated hall on a winter evening. Wind passes through the cloth however many layers sit beneath it, and by the time you have added enough of them the suit is hidden anyway.
For those days a winter cloth is warmer with fewer layers. Khaddar, karandi, marina and linen are compared in our winter guide, and autumn layering covers the in-between weeks. If you are ordering for the cold, plan ahead: making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time is added to that, so a winter suit ordered when the first frost arrives will turn up later than you want it.
Common questions
Can lawn be worn all year round?
In warm climates and in heated buildings, yes. In places with cold winters it works for most of the year if you add a base layer and a shawl, but it is not enough alone for long spells outdoors in the coldest months.
What should I wear under a lawn kameez when it is cold?
A thin, close thermal top with long sleeves in a skin tone or a shade near the suit’s background colour, plus thermal leggings or tights under the trousers. Thin layers trap warmth without changing how the suit hangs.
Is a lined lawn suit warm enough without other layers?
No. A lining adds a little warmth and stops the fabric clinging, but two thin cotton layers are still thin. Treat lining as a help for layering, not a replacement for a shawl or cardigan.
