What does tapered mean on trousers and sleeves?
Tapered trousers narrow gradually from the hip or knee to the ankle. Tapered against straight and slim legs, where the taper starts and the two widths to give.
InspirationThe meaning of taper
Tapered means gradually narrowing towards the end. A pair of tapered trousers is roomier at the hip and thigh and gets steadily slimmer down to the ankle; a tapered sleeve is wider at the upper arm and narrower at the wrist.
The word is about the line of the leg or sleeve, not about how tight it is. A tapered trouser can be relaxed at the top and only close at the ankle, which is why it is often chosen by people who find skinny trousers too snug on the thigh.
Tapered, straight and slim compared
Shop labels blur these, so it helps to picture the leg from the side.
- Straight leg. The width stays about the same from the knee down to the hem, so the leg falls in a column. Our straight trousers page shows the shape.
- Tapered leg. The leg narrows steadily from the hip or knee to a smaller hem, so the hem is clearly narrower than the knee.
- Slim leg. Close to the body all the way down. A slim leg is usually tapered too, but it starts close at the thigh rather than relaxed.
- Peg or carrot leg. An exaggerated taper: full at the hip, often with front pleats, and sharply narrower at the ankle.
Where the taper starts
The same hem width can look quite different depending on where the narrowing begins. A taper that starts high, just below the hip, gives a long, even line and suits trousers worn under a long kameez. A taper that starts at the knee keeps the upper leg straight and only draws in over the calf, which feels freer when you sit and climb stairs.
Ankle-length tapered trousers are close to the cigarette pant, and a narrow tapered shalwar bottom is what many tailors mean by a tang mohri. If the hem gets very narrow, the opening may need a short zip or slit at the ankle so it passes over your foot.
Tapered sleeves
Most fitted sleeves are tapered by nature, because the arm itself is wider at the top than at the wrist. When a description calls a sleeve tapered, it usually means the narrowing is more marked than usual, ending close at the wrist, often with a short opening or a cuff. That contrasts with a bell sleeve, which widens as it goes down.
The two widths to give a tailor
A taper is defined by two numbers: the width at the point where it starts and the width at the hem. For trousers that usually means the knee width and the hem width; for sleeves, the upper arm and the wrist. Add the thigh if you want the top relaxed, and say whether each figure is flat or all round.
On our quote form choose straight or cigarette as the closest trouser style, then put the widths and where the taper should start in the notes, or attach a photo. The trouser size guide and the article on measuring for each trouser style show where to take each figure. Everything is agreed in the written quote before cutting; custom stitching explains the rest of the process.
Common questions
Do tapered trousers make legs look shorter?
Not necessarily. Ankle-length tapered trousers show the ankle, which many people feel lengthens the leg. Very full tops with a sharp taper can shorten the look, so the amount of taper is worth balancing with your kameez length.
Can a tapered trouser be pull-on?
Yes, as long as the hem passes over the foot and the waist is elasticated or drawstring. A very narrow hem may need a zip or slit at the ankle.
Is tapered the same as skinny?
No. Skinny trousers are close everywhere, usually in stretch fabric. Tapered trousers can be relaxed at the hip and thigh and only narrow towards the ankle.
