What is a shalwar kameez? The three pieces explained

What is a shalwar kameez? The tunic, the gathered trousers and the dupatta explained for newcomers, what “suit” means, when it is worn and the three ways to buy one.

A plain definition

A shalwar kameez is a South Asian outfit made of a long tunic (the kameez), loose trousers (the shalwar) and, usually, a long scarf (the dupatta). It is regarded as the national dress of Pakistan and is worn widely in north India, Afghanistan and South Asian communities everywhere, for everyday life as much as for celebrations.

You will see several spellings and names for the same outfit. Salwar is the usual Indian and Punjabi spelling, shalwar the Pakistani one, and kameez is also written qameez or kamiz. In Britain it is often called a salwar suit, a Pakistani suit or an Asian suit, and in Pakistan most people simply say “suit”.

The three pieces

Each piece has its own vocabulary of cuts and details, and our stitching glossary gives one-line meanings for words such as gala, daman, chaak and paincha.

  • Kameez: a long shirt or tunic, usually with side slits, ranging from hip length to the calf or longer. It can be straight, A-line or flared, and most of the design shows in its neckline, sleeves and hem.
  • Shalwar: trousers that are wide at the waist and seat, gathered on a drawstring and narrowing into a cuff at the ankle. Many women now wear straight trousers, cigarette pants or a churidar instead, and the outfit is still called a shalwar kameez.
  • Dupatta: a long rectangular scarf worn over the shoulders, across the chest or over the head. Its size, fabric and edging vary a great deal; our guide to dupatta sizes and styles explains them.

What “suit” means here

In Pakistan and among British Pakistanis, “suit” on its own almost always means a shalwar kameez, not a jacket and trousers. A three-piece suit has all three pieces. A two-piece usually means kameez and trousers, though some brands use it for kameez and dupatta, so it is worth checking. An unstitched suit is the fabric for those pieces, sold uncut for a tailor to make up; two-piece vs three-piece unstitched suits compares what each pack contains.

When it is worn

Almost always. A plain cotton suit is daily wear at home, at work and at university; a printed lawn suit is the summer staple; a richer fabric with embroidery is worn for Eid, dinners and weddings as a guest. The cut stays broadly the same and the fabric and finish change with the season and the occasion: lawn for heat, khaddar and karandi for winter, chiffon and silk for the evening.

Three ways to buy one

Which route suits you depends on how much choice you want over fabric and fit. Made to measure vs ready to wear vs unstitched compares them in more depth.

Through our custom stitching service you can have a suit made in fabric we supply or in fabric you send, and it takes 5 to 7 working days to make once the quote is approved and paid in full, plus shipping. Request a quote when you know roughly what you want.

  • Ready-made (pret): stitched to a brand’s standard sizes and worn straight away, or after alterations.
  • Unstitched: a pack of fabric for the kameez, trousers and dupatta, which you take to a tailor.
  • Made to measure: a tailor cuts and stitches it to your own measurements and chosen design.

Common questions

What is the difference between a kameez and a kurta?

Both are tunics. Kurta is often used for a simpler or shorter top, especially one worn with jeans or trousers, and kameez for the top of a full suit, but the words overlap and many people use them interchangeably.

Do I have to wear the dupatta?

Not always. Many women leave it off for casual wear or work, and some outfits are designed as two pieces. It is worn more often at formal and family occasions, but that comes down to custom and personal choice.

Is salwar the same as shalwar?

Yes. They are two spellings of the same word; salwar is common in India and shalwar in Pakistan. A salwar suit and a shalwar kameez describe the same kind of outfit.
