What to wear to a charity fundraising dinner

What to wear to a charity dinner or fundraiser: formal but plainer than wedding wear, in desi or Western dress, for round tables, speeches and long seated hours.

Formal, but quieter than a wedding

Wear formal evening clothes with restraint: a shalwar kameez or long dress in a rich, mostly plain colour with light embroidery, or a tailored trouser outfit. A fundraising dinner sits closer to a smart dinner than a wedding, and you will spend hours seated at a round table through speeches, appeals and perhaps an auction.

If the ticket names a dress code, follow it. “Formal” or “black tie” means evening wear; “smart” means a good suit or dress without much sparkle. Community fundraisers held in banqueting halls often see a mix of desi and Western dress, and both are equally at home.

What people see across a round table

For most of the evening you are seen from the waist up, across a table, in a hall that may be dimly lit with spotlights on the stage. Detail at the neckline and on the sleeves does the work here; embroidery on the hem will barely be seen until you stand.

Deep colours such as emerald, sapphire, wine and charcoal look rich under event lighting. A cotton silk or raw silk suit has a gentle sheen that suits the setting without looking like wedding wear.

Built for three hours in a chair

Long seated dinners are hard on clothes. A few choices keep you comfortable and tidy until the last speech:

  • Creases: silk blends and crepe recover from sitting better than linen or thin cotton.
  • Waist: a trouser waist with some give, because the meal is several courses.
  • Slits and length: side slits long enough to sit without the kameez pulling across your lap.
  • Sleeves: nothing that dips into plates or catches a candle in the table centre.
  • Dupatta: a lighter dupatta pinned at one shoulder, or a stole, rather than a long one trailing on the floor beside your chair.
  • Layer: halls swing between cold and warm, so bring a shawl that suits the outfit.

Desi, Western or an abaya

A straight or A-line kameez with cigarette or straight trousers looks sharp and formal. A long dress or maxi with sleeves is the Western equivalent, and a wide-leg trouser with a long tunic sits between the two. A formal abaya over a simple dress is just as suitable; our wedding guest abaya guide covers the same level of dressiness.

Fundraisers come round every year, so a plain, well-cut outfit you can restyle with a different shawl or jewellery earns its place many times over.

Common questions

How formal is “smart” on a charity dinner ticket?

Smart usually means a good suit or dress that you might wear to an important dinner, without heavy embellishment. A pressed shalwar kameez in a good fabric with light embroidery fits well.

Is black a good choice for a fundraising dinner?

Yes. Black is classic evening wear and works in both desi and Western styles. Lift it with a coloured dupatta, a shawl or embroidery in a contrasting thread if you want more life in photographs.

Can I wear the same outfit to several fundraisers?

Of course. Change the dupatta, shawl or jewellery and it looks different each time. A plain, well-cut outfit is the most re-wearable kind.
