What to wear to a farewell party or annual dinner

For a university farewell or an annual dinner, a long kameez with wide trousers, a floor-length maxi dress or a dressy co-ord all give the formality of a sari with far less to manage. Pick the one you can walk, sit and dance in for hours, and that looks good in a crowded group photo.
Saris are a farewell tradition at many South Asian universities, and they look beautiful. They also need confident draping, care on stairs and a stage, and regular checking through the night. If that sounds like hard work, these alternatives give the same sense of occasion.
Three alternatives that feel just as special
Each of these works at both a student farewell and a work dinner, with small changes to the detail:
- A long kameez with wide trousers: calf or floor length over a sharara or palazzo gives a long, graceful line. An angrakha front adds interest without much embroidery.

Test it for moving, sitting and photos
Farewells and annual dinners are long nights with a lot of photographs. Before you settle on a design, think it through:
- Walking: can you climb onto a stage or down stairs in heels without lifting the hem? Ankle length is easier than floor length.
- Sitting: side slits or a flared cut let you sit at a table without the kameez pulling.
- Dancing: a dupatta pinned at the shoulder stays put; a loose one ends up in your hand.
- Photos: camera flash can show through sheer fabric, so ask for a lining. Heavy sequins sometimes catch the flash as glare.
- Colour: in a sea of black, a jewel colour stands out in the group picture; in a sea of colour, black looks sharp.
Annual dinners at work

Can I coordinate outfits with friends?
Yes. A shared colour, or the same cut in different colours, looks good in photos. Agree it early so everyone has time to order.

Very much so. Black is a popular choice for evening farewells and dinners, especially with metallic or coloured embroidery to lift it.
What should I wear on my feet?
Block heels or embellished flats are kinder than stilettos on a long night with stairs and dancing. Try them with the outfit to check the hem length.
