What to wear to a medical appointment
What to wear to a doctor’s appointment so you stay mostly covered: two pieces, a front opening, sleeves that push above the elbow and trouser hems that roll up.
InspirationSeparates, sleeves and an opening at the front
Wear two pieces rather than one: a kurta or kameez with trousers lets you uncover only the part that needs to be seen, while a dress may mean changing into a gown. Add sleeves that push easily above the elbow, a front opening or roomy neckline, and trouser hems wide enough to roll past the knee. If your clinic sends instructions about clothing, follow those first; this article is practical clothing advice, not medical advice.
The aim is simple: you should be able to make each part of your body available for a check while the rest stays covered and you feel at ease.
Why two pieces work better than a dress
With a single dress or a long abaya, almost any examination of the body means taking it off. With separates, a nurse can check your abdomen by lowering a trouser waistband a little and lifting the kameez hem, or listen to your back by lifting the kameez at the back only. A long kameez also covers you while you sit on the couch.
If you usually wear an abaya, a light kurta and trousers underneath give you the same option: take off the abaya and you are still fully dressed.
Sleeves for blood pressure and blood tests
A blood pressure cuff goes around the upper arm, and blood is usually taken from the inside of the elbow. Both need the sleeve out of the way without a tight band of rolled fabric squeezing your arm.
Elbow sleeves or three-quarter sleeves with a little width are the easiest. A full sleeve works if it is loose enough to slide up past the elbow; a buttoned cuff that opens, or a slit at the wrist, helps a narrow sleeve roll up neatly. Very fitted full sleeves are the hardest, because they either will not move or cut into the arm once pushed up.
Necklines, waists and hems
Think through the checks you are expecting and dress for them. A few general patterns help:
- Chest checks: a front placket with buttons, or a loose neckline, lets a stethoscope or sticky pads reach the chest while most of the top stays on. Our nursing-friendly kurtas guide describes front openings that also suit this.
- Abdominal scans: an elastic or drawstring waist lowers easily, and a kameez can be lifted from the hem. Avoid a fitted one-piece.
- Knees, shins and ankles: a straight trouser or shalwar with a wide hem rolls up past the knee; churidar and skinny cigarette trousers do not.
- Metal: if you are having an X-ray or a scan, the clinic may ask you to remove items with metal. A kameez without zips, metal hooks or metallic embroidery saves a change.
- Shoes: slip-ons are easier if you need to stand on scales or lie on a couch.
Comfort while you wait
Waiting rooms can be cold one minute and stuffy the next, and appointments run late. A soft cotton or lawn outfit with a shawl or cardigan lets you adjust. A large dupatta or shawl is also useful as an extra cover over your legs or shoulders during an examination. See our everyday clothes page for more easy outfits.
Having appointment-friendly clothes made
If you have regular appointments, it may be worth having one or two outfits made with these details built in. Through custom stitching you can ask for a front placket, a wider elbow or three-quarter sleeve, an elastic waist and wide trouser hems, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, with shipping time added. Request a quote and describe what you need in the notes.
Common questions
What should I wear to an ultrasound scan?
For a scan of the abdomen, a kameez or top with a separate trouser or skirt is easiest, ideally with an elastic or drawstring waist. Follow any instructions in your appointment letter, as some scans have their own requirements.
Are leggings or loose trousers better for an appointment?
Loose trousers usually are, because they can be rolled up past the knee and lowered slightly at the waist. Leggings must come off for most checks of the leg.
Should I avoid embroidery on appointment clothes?
Light thread embroidery is fine. Metallic thread, sequins and metal fastenings are worth avoiding if you may have an X-ray or scan, because you may be asked to remove clothing with metal.
