What to wear to a school admission interview as a parent
What to wear to a school admission interview as a parent: plain, pressed and calm clothes, a neat dupatta or scarf and nothing you need to adjust while you talk.
InspirationPlain, pressed and easy to sit in
Dress neatly and simply, as you would for a meeting with a professional: a pressed kurta or shalwar kameez in a solid, calm colour, or smart trousers with a blouse or jacket, with nothing you need to adjust while you talk. The school is meeting your family, so the aim is to look settled and attentive rather than dressed up.
The school is interested in your child, not your wardrobe. Clothes simply help you feel composed, and they stop the conversation drifting towards a jangling bracelet or a dupatta you keep catching.
What to choose
Think of it as the calmer cousin of a job interview, which our article on modest job interview outfits covers in detail. For a parent meeting, these points matter most:
- Colour: navy, grey, olive, maroon, soft blue or a muted pastel. Very bright or neon shades can feel loud in a small office.
- Pattern: plain, or a small, quiet print.
- Embellishment: none, or delicate thread work at the neckline only.
- Length: a knee or calf-length kameez that sits well when you sit down.
- Fabric: a matte cotton or cotton blend that will not crease badly on the journey. Cambric holds a crisp, pressed look.
Nothing to fiddle with
You may be holding a younger child, carrying documents and shaking hands, all while answering questions. Pin your dupatta or choose a scarf that stays put. Leave stacks of bangles at home. Choose shoes you can manage on stairs and across a playground, and a bag that sits on your shoulder so your hands are free.
If you will be sitting on a low chair in a classroom, which happens more often than parents expect, a kameez with comfortable side slits and trousers with room at the knee save an awkward moment.
Tours, play sessions and both parents
Many admissions include a tour or an assessment where your child plays or works while you wait or watch. Expect corridors, stairs and possibly a walk across a field. A light jacket or cardigan is useful, as school buildings can be cold.
If both parents are attending, there is no need to coordinate, but similar levels of formality look more natural than one parent in a suit and the other in weekend clothes.
Having a smart, plain outfit made
A plain, well-fitted kurta with straight trousers is useful long after the interview, at parents’ evenings, meetings and offices. If you already have a suitable unstitched suit, Stitching Only turns it into one; you confirm the fabric with us before sending it to Pakistan, and making takes 5 to 7 working days once it arrives and the quote is paid in full. Shipping both ways adds time. Ask for a stitching-only quote, and see our everyday outfits page for more ideas.
Common questions
Should I wear traditional or Western clothes to the interview?
Wear whatever you normally feel most yourself in, as long as it is neat and calm. A plain shalwar kameez is every bit as smart as a blouse and trousers.
Should my child dress up for the admission interview?
Clean, comfortable clothes they can move and play in are best. If the school asks for anything specific, follow that.
Is it fine to wear a hijab or dupatta?
Yes. Wear it as you usually do, pinned or arranged so it stays in place while you talk, hold your child or look at papers.
