What to wear to a university welcome party

Welcome party dress ideas: smart kurta sets and co-ords that sit between campus daywear and the formal farewell, for a first event where you know nobody yet.

Aim for the middle

For a university welcome party, wear something a step smarter than your everyday campus clothes but well short of wedding wear: a dressy kurta set, a co-ord in a strong colour, or a printed two-piece with a little embroidery, with shoes you can stand and dance in. Save the heavy embroidery for the farewell.

In many universities in Pakistan and across South Asia, senior students throw a welcome party for new students. Elsewhere it might be a freshers’ event or a student society’s welcome night. Either way it is the first social event of the year, the dress code is vague and you may know nobody, so the middle ground is the safest place to be.

Reading a vague dress code

Most invitations say little more than “eastern” or “dress up”. A little research takes the guesswork out.

  • Ask a senior: whoever is organising it will tell you what people wore last year.
  • Look at last year’s photos: student societies usually post them online.
  • Check the venue: a hall on campus suggests smart casual; a hired venue in the evening suggests dressier.
  • Check for a theme: some welcome parties have a colour or a dress theme, announced shortly before.

Outfits that land in the right place

These sit comfortably between daywear and formal wear, and our campus outfits guide has more for everyday wear afterwards.

  • A co-ord set: kurta and trousers in one colour with embroidery at the neckline; easy to wear and polished in photos.
  • A short kurta with wide trousers: a hip or thigh length kurta over palazzo trousers moves well if there is dancing.
  • A printed two-piece with a dressy dupatta: add a chiffon or organza dupatta to an everyday set.
  • A long dress: a maxi or a shirt dress with a scarf for a Western take; our tiered maxi dress is a long, covered option.

What to leave for later

Heavily embroidered suits, shararas and ghararas, and anything that needs managing all evening are better kept for the farewell or a wedding, where the dress code is clearly formal. Our graduation outfit ideas cover that end of university life.

Think about the evening itself, too. Welcome parties usually involve standing, games, music and a lot of photos. Choose shoes you can wear for hours, a dupatta you can pin or leave off, and somewhere to keep your phone.

Ordering a co-ord or kurta set

If you want something made for the term ahead, a co-ord that works for the welcome party and for smarter days afterwards is a good use of one order. You can send your own design or a photo you like, and choose the neckline, sleeves, length and embroidery level. Start a quote from your photo. Making takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment, plus shipping, so order before term starts.

Common questions

Is shalwar kameez too formal for a welcome party?

Not at all. A shalwar kameez or kurta set in a bright colour with light embroidery is one of the most common choices. Keep it lighter than wedding wear.

Should I coordinate with friends?

If you already have friends going, coordinating colours is fun, but you do not need to. Most people arrive in whatever they feel good in.

What if I end up underdressed?

A dressy dupatta, earrings or a lipstick in your bag can lift an outfit in a minute. Being a little casual at a first event is rarely remembered.
