What to wear to your child’s graduation as a mother

What to wear to your child’s graduation as a mother: smart daytime clothes that sit well beside a black gown in photos, with comfort for a long ceremony and a walk.

Smart, daytime and not competing with the gown

Wear smart daytime clothes a notch dressier than office wear: a pressed shalwar kameez, a kurta with tailored trousers, or a midi dress with a light jacket, in a colour that looks good next to a black gown without matching your child’s outfit. Comfortable shoes matter more than you might think, because graduation days combine long seated ceremonies, queues and walks across campus for photographs.

The day belongs to the graduate. Your outfit should look proud and polished rather than party-ready. If your child is still deciding what to wear under the gown, our graduation outfit ideas are written for them.

Colours beside a black gown

Most academic gowns are black, with coloured hoods that vary by university and degree. In photographs you will often stand shoulder to shoulder with that black, so think about contrast.

  • Mid and light tones such as teal, sky blue, dusty pink, sage or mustard stand out cleanly beside black.
  • All black merges with the gown in group shots.
  • Echoing the hood colour in a dupatta or scarf is a quiet, thoughtful touch if you know it in advance.
  • Large bold prints can overwhelm a two-person photo; a medium print or a plain kameez with a printed dupatta is calmer.

How dressy to go

Graduations are formal ceremonies held in the daytime. Light embroidery at the neckline and cuffs, a cotton silk or good cotton fabric and a neat dupatta all fit. Heavy embellishment, velvet and wedding-weight fabrics look out of place at midday.

A shirt dress or tailored co-ord is another good choice if you prefer Western clothes; our shirt dress is a button-front design that can be made to measure. For more ideas, see our co-ord sets guide.

Comfort over a long day

A graduation can mean hours in a hall, followed by photographs outdoors in whatever the weather is doing. Plan for it: a kameez that does not crease badly when you sit, a layer for a cold hall or a breezy lawn, and shoes that will not sink into grass. Pin a chiffon dupatta, because wind on an open campus will lift it in every photo. A bag with room for a folding umbrella is never wasted.

Travelling to the graduation

If you are flying in for the day, choose fabrics that pack well and decide on the outfit early. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time comes on top, so order well ahead of your travel date. Our guide to packing formal outfits helps the outfit arrive uncreased.

With Fabric + Stitching we supply the agreed fabric and make the outfit to your measurements. Ask for a fabric and stitching quote and mention the date in your notes.

Common questions

Should I coordinate my outfit with my child’s?

Coordinating is lovely, matching is not necessary. Ask what your child is wearing under the gown and choose a colour that sits well beside it, so the photographs look like a pair rather than a set.

Is a shalwar kameez suitable for a university graduation?

Yes. Many parents wear one, and a smart, lightly embellished suit looks just as formal as a dress and jacket. Keep the dupatta manageable for a long day.

What if it rains on graduation day?

Choose a fabric that will not be ruined by a shower, such as cotton or a cotton blend, bring a folding umbrella and a light coat, and avoid trouser hems that trail on wet ground.
