What to wear with a white kurta
What to wear with a white kurta: the trousers, jeans, dupattas and layers that take it from everyday to dressy, and how to keep thin white cotton opaque.
InspirationStart with the trousers, then add one colour
A white kurta goes with almost any trousers: white or ivory for a clean all-white set, blue jeans or beige trousers for everyday, and black or a single strong colour when you want it sharper. To dress it up, keep the kurta as it is and change the dupatta, the shoes and the jewellery.
White is the easiest colour to pair because it has no opinion about what sits next to it. The difficulty is the opposite one: with every option open, outfits drift into looking unplanned. Deciding the trousers first, and then allowing yourself one colour to repeat, keeps a white kurta looking deliberate.
Which trousers with a white kurta?
Each pairing below gives the same kurta a different job.
- White or ivory trousers. The classic set, cool in summer and smart enough for most gatherings. Match the whites closely or make them clearly different: a bright white kurta over trousers that are only slightly cream looks like a mistake, while white over a definite ivory or stone looks chosen.
- Blue jeans. A white kurta with jeans is the simplest everyday answer. A kurta that ends between mid-thigh and knee, with side slits, sits well over straight or slim jeans. Our guide to kurtas with jeans, skirts and blazers covers the proportions.
- Beige, tan or khaki. Softer than white on white and far more forgiving of dust and marks, which makes it a good choice for travel and long days out.
- Black. The strongest contrast. Repeat the black once, in shoes, a bag or a dupatta border, so the outfit reads as two colours used on purpose.
- A bright or printed pair. Against white, a printed shalwar or a wide trouser in mustard, pink or green becomes the centre of the outfit. Keep everything else quiet.
Dressing it up with a dupatta
A dupatta changes a white kurta faster than anything else. For daytime, a printed cotton or a soft pastel is enough. For dinners and Eid visits, a dupatta in a deep colour such as maroon, emerald or royal blue, in a fabric with some sheen, turns the same kurta into an evening outfit, especially when the shoes or earrings pick up that colour.
White also takes two colours well, which most kameez colours do not. A white kurta with mustard trousers and a pink dupatta, for example, works because the white keeps the two apart. The general method for choosing these is in our article on dupatta and trouser colours.
Layers for work and cooler weather
A layer gives a white kurta structure. A waistcoat in a contrast colour makes it look finished for work, a denim jacket relaxes it for the weekend, and a long cardigan or a shawl in camel, grey or a jewel colour carries it into autumn. Keep the layer either clearly shorter or clearly longer than the kurta so the hems do not compete. There is more on this in our guide to layering a waistcoat or jacket over a kameez.
Keeping a white kurta opaque
Thin white cotton shows what is underneath, and white lawn is the most likely to do it. A lining, or a slightly denser cotton such as cambric, solves the problem at the source. Underneath, a slip or camisole close to your own skin tone disappears under white, whereas a white one often shows as a brighter patch. Our lining guide explains how to test a fabric against the light.
Having a white kurta made to measure
If you are having one made to wear many ways, ask for a length around the knee, side slits, a plain neckline and sleeves you can push up. Say whether you want it lined. You can order a kurta on its own through custom stitching, with or without trousers: describe the white you want (bright, soft or ivory) when you request a quote, and we confirm the fabric and details in writing before anything is cut.
Common questions
What colour shoes go with a white kurta?
Tan, gold and silver go with nearly every version. Otherwise repeat a colour that is already in the outfit, such as the dupatta or the trousers, so the shoes tie it together.
Does an off-white kurta pair the same way as pure white?
Mostly, with one difference. Off-white and ivory are warmer, so they sit well with gold, rust, olive, maroon and other warm colours, and they can look dull beside very bright white trousers. Pure white is crisper with pastels, navy and black.
How do I keep a white kurta white?
Wash it with other whites only, treat marks at the neckline and cuffs before they set, and follow the care label. Test any stain remover on a hidden seam first.
