Which fabric makes a frock or anarkali flare?

Fabric for an anarkali frock: how weight and drape decide whether the panels swing, stand out or hang limp, fabric by fabric, and when net or lining adds volume.

Weight and drape decide the flare

Light, fluid fabrics such as chiffon and georgette make a frock or anarkali swing and float. Heavier fluid fabrics such as velvet, crepe and silk fall in deep folds that sway with weight. Crisp fabrics such as organza, net, raw silk and firm cotton make the skirt stand out from the body. A soft, light fabric with no body can hang limp, unless a lining or a layer of net helps it.

A kalidar frock or anarkali gets its width from many panels, or kalis, that widen towards the hem. The cut decides how much fabric is there; the fabric decides what that width does when you stand still and when you move.

Swing, stand or sag: fabric by fabric

Here is roughly how common frock fabrics behave in a full skirt:

  • Chiffon and georgette: swing and float, with the most movement when you turn. Sheer, so they are lined, and the lining shapes the silhouette.
  • Crepe and silk: fall close to the body at rest and ripple when you walk. Elegant on long frocks, with a slimmer outline.
  • Velvet: heavy and rich, hangs in deep folds. Lovely for winter, but a long, many-panelled velvet frock is heavy to wear. See the velvet guide.
  • Lawn and soft cotton: gentle, moderate flare with soft folds. Many panels in a very fine lawn can collapse a little, so a cotton lining adds body.
  • Cambric and firmer cotton: hold the panels out in a bell shape and keep their outline well.
  • Raw silk and cotton silk: crisp, with a slight sheen, and stand out from the waist. The cotton silk and raw silk guide describes both.
  • Organza and net: stand away from the body and add volume without much weight, used as an outer layer or under another fabric.

Adding volume with lining or net

When the outer fabric is soft but the look you want is full, the help comes from underneath. A lining cut with its own flare gives a fluid fabric some body and makes it opaque. A layer of stiffer net between the lining and the outer fabric pushes the skirt out further. The two must suit each other: a very stiff underlayer under fine chiffon can make the outer layer look puffy rather than floating. Our guide to net and lace fabrics explains how net behaves.

Weight at the hem matters as well. A heavier border or hem decoration pulls the panels down and gives a heavier, more swinging movement, while a plain, light hem lets the skirt lift more.

Choosing for the day you will wear it

For a long day in the heat, a cotton-lined chiffon or a soft lawn frock is easier than layers of net. For a winter evening, velvet or crepe looks rich and keeps you warm. For an Eid outfit that photographs with a strong silhouette, crisper fabrics and a net underlayer give the most shape.

Common questions

Which fabric gives an anarkali the most flare?

Crisp fabrics, such as organza, raw silk or a firm cotton, hold the most width out from the body. Soft fabrics can get close with a flared lining and a net layer underneath.

Will a lawn frock flare?

Yes, gently. Lawn gives soft, moderate flare that suits everyday frocks. For a fuller shape, a cotton lining or a firmer fabric for the skirt helps.

Does a heavy border make a frock hang better?

It makes the hem heavier, so the panels hang straighter at rest and swing more when you move. On a very light fabric, too heavy a border can drag the skirt down.
