Which trousers go with a frock or anarkali?

Which trouser goes with a frock or anarkali? Slim ones: churidar, cigarette or straight. How to choose by flare and length, and when a wide leg works.

Slim trousers, almost always

The trousers that go with a frock or anarkali are slim ones: a churidar, cigarette pants or narrow straight trousers. A frock is already wide at the hem, so the leg underneath should be the quiet part of the outfit. The exception is a short frock that ends above the knee, where a wider trouser has room to show and can work well.

Which slim trouser you choose depends on how long and how full the frock is.

Choosing by frock length

Start with where the hem of the frock falls, because that decides how much of the trouser anyone will see.

  • Floor length: the trousers barely show, so choose for comfort and for a smooth line under the bodice. A soft churidar or a plain straight trouser both work. Avoid a heavily gathered waistband, which adds bulk under a close bodice.
  • Calf length: the classic anarkali length, and the churidar is its traditional partner. The gathers at the ankle echo the fullness of the skirt above.
  • Knee length: the widest choice. Cigarette pants look sharp and modern, straight trousers are the most comfortable, and a churidar is the dressiest.
  • Above the knee or mid-thigh: a short frock or frock-style kurti leaves enough leg for straight trousers, a neat shalwar or a wide leg.

Churidar, cigarette or straight?

All three keep the outline clean under the flare of a kalidar frock, which is why they appear together so often. Colour is simple: match the frock, or pick a shade from its print or embroidery.

  • Churidar: cut long and close, so the extra length gathers in rings at the ankle. It is the most traditional look and suits full, festive frocks. It is close at the calf and knee, which some people find less comfortable for sitting on the floor.
  • Cigarette pants: slim and ankle length, with a clean hem that can carry lace or a small slit. Easier to get on and off, and the natural choice for a modern or office look.
  • Straight trousers: a little more room all the way down. The most forgiving of the three, and good under everyday cotton frocks.

When a wide leg works under a frock

A frock with palazzos is not impossible. It works when the frock is short, the flare is modest and both fabrics are soft, so the two pieces hang instead of standing out. A mid-thigh frock in lawn over fluid wide-leg trousers is relaxed and pretty, and a short frock over a sharara is a familiar party look.

It stops working as the frock gets longer and fuller. A full knee-length skirt over wide trousers gives two competing flares and a hem that catches on the trouser legs. Our article on A-line kameez with palazzos goes through that balance in detail, and the same reasoning applies to a frock, only more so.

Ordering the set

Churidar, cigarette, straight and wide-leg are all on the trouser list of our quote form, so this part is a simple choice. Tell us the length of the frock and how full it is, and if you are unsure pick “Advise me”. For a churidar, give your thigh measurement as well as the length and say whether you want an opening at the ankle, because the narrow hem has to pass over the foot.

The frock and trousers can be made together through custom stitching, in our fabric or yours. Request a quote with a photo of the frock style, and for other kameez shapes see kameez length and trouser pairings.

Common questions

Can I wear leggings under an anarkali instead of a churidar?

Yes. Stretch leggings give a similar slim line and are comfortable. A stitched churidar in the suit’s own fabric matches the colour exactly and looks more finished at the ankle, which matters most with calf-length frocks.

Do I need trousers under a floor-length frock?

Most people wear them, for cover when sitting, walking and on stairs, and because some frocks have a front or side slit. A fully lined, closed, floor-length frock can be worn as a dress if you prefer.

What colour trousers go with a printed frock?

A plain trouser in one of the quieter colours from the print is the safest choice. Matching the background colour makes the outfit look longer, while a brighter accent colour makes the trousers a feature.
