Why do my sleeves twist around my arms?

Why do my sleeves twist? Usually the sleeve is set at a different angle from the way your arm hangs. How to tell fit from fabric, and which photo to send us.

The usual reason

Sleeves twist around your arms when they are sewn into the armhole at one angle and your arms hang at another. The sleeve tries to follow the arm, the armhole holds its top end still, and the cloth between them spirals. If it happens in most of your tops, the cause is your posture meeting a standard pattern. If it happens in one garment only, look at how that garment was cut or what washing has done to it.

How an arm hangs, and how a sleeve is set

Very few arms hang straight down. Most rest slightly forward of the body, with the elbow a little bent. A sleeve pattern allows for an average amount of this: the highest point of the sleeve top is matched to the shoulder seam, and that match decides which way the whole sleeve faces.

If your shoulders sit further forward than average, as they often do with a rounded upper back, your arms hang further forward too. A standard sleeve now faces too far back for you. Your arm pushes into the front of it, creases wind from the back of the armhole down to the front of the elbow, the underarm seam creeps round to the front and the cuff ends up rotated. The upper back usually feels tight at the same time, because rounded shoulders need more width across the back as well.

Fit or fabric? Four checks

A few minutes with the garment answers most of it.

  • Does it happen in everything with sleeves? Then it is fit. One garment only points to that garment.
  • Do the sleeves mirror each other? Posture turns both sleeves towards the front, left and right as mirror images. When the cloth itself has skewed, both sleeves tend to wind in the same direction, so one seam drifts forward and the other back.
  • Did it start after a wash? Some weaves, twills especially, skew when washed, and a sleeve that was fine when new begins to turn. Side seams that wander towards the front or back are the same thing happening to the body of the kameez. Washing cloth before it is cut prevents most of this; see should you pre-wash fabric before stitching.
  • Is the sleeve tight? A sleeve that grips the upper arm or forearm is carried round by the arm and cannot settle back. Loosen the grip and the twist often goes with it.

What to send: one photo and one line

Posture is hard to measure with a tape and easy to see in a photograph. Ask someone to take a picture of you from the side, standing as you normally do with your arms hanging loose, in a close top with sleeves. Do not straighten up for the camera; the point is to show where your arms really rest. A second photo from the back shows how rounded the upper back is.

Then add one line to your notes: “sleeves always twist forward on me” or “my shoulders roll forward”. Give the shoulder, armhole and upper arm measurements from the size guide and, if you can, the width across your upper back from arm crease to arm crease. If measuring your own back sounds impossible, the measuring help page explains how we can guide you.

What changes in the cutting

For arms that hang forward, the sleeve is turned slightly in the armhole so that its highest point sits a little in front of the usual position, and the shoulder seam and back width can be adjusted to match. These are small changes, often a centimetre or so, made on the pattern before the fabric is cut. That is why they are simple in made to measure and awkward afterwards.

Ask for the sleeves to be set for your posture in your quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design. A roomy full sleeve is less sensitive to all this than a narrow one. Custom stitching explains how orders work, and you can start a quote and add your photos to it.

Common questions

Can a twisted sleeve be corrected on a kameez I already own?

Sometimes. If the cause is the way the sleeve was set, a tailor near you can unpick it and turn it slightly, provided there is enough seam allowance. If the cloth was cut off the grain or has skewed in the wash, the sleeve cannot be straightened. We do not alter existing clothes.

Why do only my long sleeves twist?

A short sleeve ends before the twist has room to show. A long sleeve is held at the top by the armhole and at the bottom by a narrow cuff or forearm, so any difference in angle between the two ends winds up the length in between.

Does carrying a bag or pushing my sleeves up cause it?

They can make a sleeve sit crooked for a while, but it falls back when you shake your arm out. A true twist returns to the same position every time you stand still, which is how you know it is built into the fit or the cloth.
