Winter dresses with sleeves, made to measure
Winter dresses with sleeves, made to measure: fabric weights to ask about, lining, room for a layer underneath, coat-friendly sleeves and a hem for boots.
InspirationWhat makes a dress a winter dress
A winter dress with sleeves needs four things a summer dress does not: a fabric with real weight or a lining, long sleeves that are close enough to go under a coat, a little room through the body for a thin layer underneath, and a length that works with boots. When a dress is made to measure, each of these can be decided before it is cut.
This is about a dress designed for cold weather from the start. If you want to keep wearing a light summer maxi through the cold months instead, our article on wearing a maxi dress in winter covers layering it.
Fabric weights to ask about
Winter fabrics from the Pakistani tradition suit day dresses very well, because they were made for cold mornings. Ask which are available for your design; what we can use is confirmed in the quote.
- [Khaddar](/fabrics/khaddar). A thick, textured cotton with a homespun feel. Warm and casual, good for a shirt dress or a straight midi.
- [Karandi](/fabrics/karandi). A textured winter weave with a slightly crisp handle. Holds a shape and takes embroidery well.
- [Marina](/fabrics/marina). Soft and smooth with a gentle drape, so it suits gathered skirts and wrap shapes.
- [Velvet](/fabrics/velvet). For winter evenings and gatherings rather than daily wear.
- Heavier cotton or cambric. Enough for mild winters and heated offices, especially with a lining.
Lining and a layer underneath
A lining adds a layer of warmth, stops tights from clinging and helps the dress slide over a thermal top. Our guide to lining for hot and cold climates explains which linings suit winter.
If you plan to wear a thermal vest or a fine long-sleeved base layer under the dress, take your bust and sleeve measurements over it, or tell us to allow for one. The sleeve should still be slim enough to go into a coat sleeve without bunching. Balloon and bell sleeves look lovely indoors but fight with outerwear.
Shapes that work in the cold
Simple shapes layer most easily. A shirt dress with a button front, an A-line midi, a straight shift with side slits or a wrap dress all sit well under a coat. Our button-front shirt dress is a long dress with a pointed collar and long sleeves that roll up and fasten with a tab, the kind of shape that goes from a heated room to a cold street. If you would rather wear a suit, the embroidered karandi suit is made in karandi, a textured winter weave.
A hem that suits boots
With knee boots, a midi hem should either cover the top of the boot or sit clearly below it; a gap of bare tights between hem and boot looks colder than it is. With ankle boots, an ankle-length or long midi hem is easiest in wet weather. Measure the length while wearing the boots you plan to use.
Send a photo or sketch of the dress you want through Fabric + Stitching, with the fabric you are interested in, lining, sleeve and length. Request a Fabric + Stitching quote and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in writing before anything is cut.
Common questions
Can a summer dress design be made in a winter fabric?
Often, yes. A shape you like can usually be cut in a heavier fabric, sometimes with small changes such as a slimmer sleeve. Ask in your enquiry and we confirm what works in the quote.
Is a lined dress warm enough without tights?
Indoors it may be, but outdoors in real cold most people still want tights, leggings or slim trousers underneath. A lining adds warmth to the body more than the legs.
Which length is most practical for winter?
A long midi or ankle length worn with boots keeps the legs covered and stays out of puddles better than a floor-length hem.
