How to wear a maxi dress in winter

How to wear a maxi dress in winter: warm layers or slim trousers underneath, knitwear over the top, a coat length that suits the hem and boots that keep the line.

Layer below, layer above, then sort the coat

To wear a maxi dress in winter, put a warm base under it (thick opaque tights, thermal leggings or slim trousers), add a knitted layer on top, and choose a coat that either stops well above the hem or covers almost all of it. Ankle or knee boots finish it. A long skirt already covers the legs, so a maxi is easier to carry into the cold months than a short dress.

The dress you wore in July needs a plan for three zones, not replacing: your legs, your arms and chest, and the point where the coat ends.

Underneath the skirt

Warmth starts at the legs, because a long skirt traps whatever air is underneath it. Choose the base by how much shows when you walk or sit.

One snag with light fabrics: a chiffon or georgette skirt over nylon tights can cling and crackle in dry, heated air. A half-slip between the two, or a dress that already has a lining, stops most of it. Our note on static and other winter fabric problems has more remedies.

  • Opaque tights. The simplest option. Match them to your boots rather than the dress so the leg reads as one dark line.
  • Thermal or fleece-backed leggings. Warmer than tights, invisible under a full skirt, and fine for long waits at bus stops.
  • Slim trousers. Cigarette pants or narrow straight trousers give full cover when a side slit or a breeze lifts the hem, which many people prefer for modesty.
  • Avoid wide trousers under a narrow skirt. Palazzos and shalwars bunch up and make the dress hang unevenly.

Over the top: knitwear, jackets and shawls

A fine-gauge jumper pulled over a maxi dress turns it into what looks like a long skirt, and changes the outfit completely. Tuck the front of the jumper in loosely, or leave it out if the dress has a gathered waist that would add bulk. A long cardigan worn open keeps the vertical line, and a belt over the cardigan pulls the shape back in.

Sleeves decide what you can wear on top. Full or balloon sleeves will not squeeze into the narrow sleeve of a fitted jumper; they need a cardigan with roomy armholes, a cape, a poncho or a wool shawl. Our tiered maxi dress, for example, has full balloon sleeves gathered at the cuff, so a shawl or an open coat with a wide sleeve sits over it more comfortably than a slim knit.

A denim or cropped jacket works on mild days and shows plenty of the skirt, which is useful if the print is the point of the dress.

Coat length against the hem

The awkward look comes from a coat that ends a hand’s width above the dress hem, so that a thin strip of skirt peeks out like a mistake. Pick one of three clear proportions instead.

A wool coat over a light skirt can catch and drag the fabric as you walk. A coat with a little flare at the hem, or an open front, lets the skirt move. Our guide to autumn layering with kurtas uses the same proportion rules for long tunics.

  • Short: a cropped or waist-length jacket, showing most of the skirt.
  • Middle: a knee-length coat, with plenty of dress clearly visible below it.
  • Long: a coat that reaches the calf or lower and leaves only a little skirt showing at the ankle.

Shoes, and a hem that suits them

Ankle boots with a slim profile disappear under a long skirt and keep the outline clean. Knee boots are warmer and look deliberate when the dress has a side slit or a front split. Chunky trainers suit a casual cotton maxi at the weekend, and loafers with dark tights work for the office.

Wet pavements are the real winter problem. A floor-length hem soaks up rain and grit, especially with flat boots. If you are having a dress made with the colder months in mind, measure the length while wearing the boots you plan to use and ask for an ankle-length finish. Our guide on measuring for a maxi dress shows where to take that measurement.

Ordering a maxi you will wear in the cold

When a dress is planned for winter, ask about a lining, a slightly heavier fabric and sleeves cut to slip under a coat. With Fabric + Stitching we suggest a fabric for the design; send a photo or a written brief through the design quote form and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Common questions

Can I wear a chiffon maxi dress in winter?

Yes, as long as the warmth comes from layers. Wear thermal leggings or slim trousers under it, a slip to stop it clinging, and a shawl or open coat over it. Chiffon itself adds no warmth.

Should my tights match the dress or the boots?

Usually the boots. Tights that run into boots of the same colour make one unbroken line under the skirt, which looks tidier than a third colour between the dress and the shoes.

Is a floor-length dress practical in winter?

Indoors, yes. Outdoors in rain or snow the hem gets wet and dirty quickly. An ankle-length hem worn with boots is easier to live with for daily wear.
