Start with open or closed. The kimono, bisht, tulip, cape, pleated and tailored abayas open down the front and go over a dress or a top and trousers. The butterfly, bell, lantern and layered abayas close and work as the outfit itself, which is handy on mornings when you have no time to think.
Then look at where the jasmine sits, because on black the embroidery is what people notice. It runs down both front edges on the kimono, bisht and pleated shapes, around the collar and placket on the lantern, around the neckline on the butterfly, and along the shawl collar and cuffs on the tailored cut. The tulip and layered designs gather it into a spray over one shoulder, and the cape trims the edge of its short cape.

Black gives embroidery the strongest contrast of any colour in the collection. The cream flowers stand out clearly, and the gold leaves catch the light without making the whole piece look gold. That balance means the same black abaya can go to work with a plain scarf and to a dinner with gold jewellery. Hand embroidery gives the small jasmine flowers a rounded look that still shows on black in dim light. Machine embroidery is flatter and very even. Mixed work combines the two, and all three cost the same.

Fabric changes black more than it changes any other colour. Nida is matte, so it reads as a deep, flat black and shows the cream embroidery cleanly. Crepe has a fine grainy texture that gives the black a little depth and hangs with more weight. Chiffon is light and slightly sheer, and in a single layer that sheerness makes the black look softer and a shade lighter, so add a lining if you want the solid black of the other two.
This is also why a black hijab you already own may not match a new abaya. Blacks are mixed from different dyes, and fabrics reflect light differently, so two blacks can lean blue or brown side by side. The scarf included with each design comes in the same colour as the abaya, which saves you hunting for a match.

Black shows lint, dust and pet hair more than any other shade. Keep a lint roller by the door, or run a slightly damp rubber glove down the front before you go out, and most of it lifts straight off.
Fading comes mostly from heat and sun. Wash it inside out in cool water, dry it in the shade and keep it away from a sunny window, and the black stays deep for longer. Washing inside out also stops the embroidery rubbing against other clothes in the machine.
