Instead of a single tube of fabric, each sleeve has curved edges that lie over each other. When your arm is still they look like one soft, wide sleeve. When you walk or gesture, the edges shift and part slightly, and that is what gives the sleeve its movement.
The parting is worth knowing about. If you need your arms fully covered when you reach up, at work or at prayer, ask for straight sleeves instead of petals. The rest of the abaya stays the same.

Most abaya embroidery is placed evenly on both sides. On the tulip designs it is not: the motif gathers in a spray over one shoulder and runs down the front, with more work on the sleeves. The effect is closer to a corsage than a border, and it draws the eye up towards the face.
Drape your scarf to the other side, or pin it close at the neck, so it does not hide the spray. If you want a calmer front, the embroidery can go on the sleeves only, which leaves the body plain and lets the petals carry the design.
The flowering motifs suit this placement especially well: magnolias on long stems, irises in soft blue, rosebuds along a trailing vine. The pearl grey lattice and the wave lines with their small shells give the spray a more graphic look.

Crepe gives each petal a defined curve that holds its shape. Nida is softer, and the edges fall more loosely, which looks relaxed for every day. Chiffon makes the sleeves float and suits evening events, weddings and Eid, with a lining if you want the body less see-through.
Because the front is open, what you wear underneath shows down the centre. A plain long dress, or straight trousers with a long top in the same colour family, keeps attention on the sleeves and the spray. In a British winter the open front layers over a knitted dress; in the Gulf it lets air in.

The black jasmine and the olive green branches are the easy ones to wear often, and taupe acacia sits well with neutral clothes. Pearl grey suits an office. Dusty mauve rosebud and navy iris have a soft, sociable look for gatherings, while the chocolate palm fronds, burgundy arabesque, deep teal waves and ivory magnolias are the ones to save for Eid and wedding invitations.
