Wearing an abaya over shalwar kameez without bulk

How to wear an abaya over shalwar kameez without bulk: which kameez lengths, sleeves and dupattas sit well, which suit shapes bunch and what ease to ask for.

It works with the right two pieces

A shalwar kameez sits comfortably under an abaya when the kameez is a little shorter than the abaya, its hem and sleeves are not too full, and the abaya has enough ease at the hip and sleeve to go over it. Measure for the abaya while wearing the kind of kameez you usually wear underneath, and most of the bulk disappears.

This is everyday wear for many women, and it is worth getting right. Our wider guide on what to wear under an abaya covers other layers; this one looks at the kameez in detail.

How each part sits underneath

Go through your suit piece by piece.

  • Kameez length: a kameez that ends at least a hand’s width above the abaya hem stays hidden. A kameez that reaches the ankle needs a floor-length abaya, or it peeps out when you walk.
  • The daman: a straight hem lies flat. A wide flared daman, a gol daman or an embroidered border with stiff lace can push the abaya out at the knee.
  • Sleeves: fitted or straight kameez sleeves slide into an abaya sleeve easily. Wide or bell sleeves bunch at the elbow and wrist, so the abaya sleeve must be wider too.
  • Shalwar: a soft shalwar sits easily; a very full one with many pleats adds width at the hip and ankle.
  • Dupatta: worn under the abaya, it adds a layer across the chest and shoulders. A light chiffon or lawn dupatta folds neatly; a heavy embroidered one does not.

Suit shapes that tend to bunch

Some kameez cuts are designed to be seen and fight an abaya. A kalidar frock, with its many flared panels, holds a lot of fabric at the hem. An angrakha with front ties creates ridges, and heavily embroidered necklines or thick formal fabrics show through a light abaya.

For daily wear under an abaya, a straight kameez in a light fabric such as lawn or cambric is the easiest choice. Keep the flared and embroidered suits for when the abaya comes off.

The ease to ask for

If the abaya will go over a kameez most days, take its bust, hip and upper arm measurements over the kameez rather than over thin clothing, and say so in your order. That builds the extra room in without guessing.

Check the armhole too. A kameez sleeve with a seam at the shoulder adds a little thickness at the armhole, so a slightly deeper abaya armhole avoids a tight feeling when you raise your arms. Our guide on shoulder and bust ease explains how much room is usual.

Ordering an abaya for daily kameez wear

We make abayas to measure in fabric we supply or yours. Tell us in the quote form that you wear a shalwar kameez underneath, with its usual length and sleeve style, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. A lighter abaya fabric keeps two layers comfortable in warm weather.

Common questions

Should my dupatta go under or over the abaya?

Under the abaya, a light dupatta can be folded across the shoulders or tucked away. Many women wear a separate hijab or scarf over the abaya instead and leave the dupatta at home on busy days.

Is an open or closed abaya better over a kameez?

A closed abaya hides the kameez completely. An open one lets the kameez show at the front, which looks deliberate if the colours go together.

Does a kameez make the abaya ride up when I sit?

It can, if both fabrics are slippery or the abaya is tight at the hip. Extra hip ease and a matte kameez fabric such as cotton help the layers stay put.
