Autumn layering with kurtas, cardigans and coats

How to layer kurtas and kameez for autumn: fabrics to choose, sleeve and length choices that sit well under coats, and pairing cardigans, shawls and ankle boots.

The in-between season

Autumn is the hardest season to dress for: bright, mild afternoons, cold mornings and damp evenings, often all in one day. Summer lawn feels too thin, and full winter khaddar is too much at lunchtime. The answer is layers, and a kurta is one of the easiest pieces to layer if it has been cut with that in mind.

A few decisions at the stitching stage make all the difference: the fabric weight, the sleeve shape, the kameez length relative to your coat, and how much room there is for a fine layer underneath.

Fabrics for autumn

  • Cambric: heavier and more opaque than lawn, with a crisp finish. The natural autumn fabric; our cambric guide has more.
  • Dobby, slub and textured cottons: a little more body and visual warmth without much extra weight. See dobby, slub and textured cotton.
  • Linen and linen blends: good on mild days, and a lovely base for layering in deeper colours.
  • Light khaddar: for the colder end of autumn. Our winter fabrics guide compares khaddar, karandi and marina.
  • Last summer’s lawn: still wearable with a lining, a cardigan and closed shoes, which stretches a summer wardrobe into October.

Cardigans, coats and shawls

Cardigans: a fine-knit cardigan in a plain colour picked from the kurta print is the simplest autumn layer. Longer cardigans that reach the hip or thigh sit well over a knee-length kameez; cropped ones suit shorter kurtas.

Coats: the key question is length. A coat that ends a little below the kameez hem looks deliberate; one that ends just above it leaves an awkward band of kameez showing. If you wear the same coat most days, measure its length and tell us, and we can suggest a kameez length that works with it. A long straight kurta under a trench coat or a longline wool coat is a classic combination.

Shawls and waistcoats: a wool or wool-blend shawl can replace the dupatta entirely on cold days, wrapped over a coat or worn indoors, and a plain one lets a printed kurta do the work. A sleeveless waistcoat or short jacket in a coordinating fabric can also be stitched alongside the outfit if you ask.

Cutting a kurta that layers well

  • Sleeves: fitted or straight sleeves, full or three-quarter, slide into coat sleeves; wide bell sleeves bunch up. Our sleeve guide shows the options.
  • Room for a base layer: if you wear a thin thermal or fine knit underneath, measure over it or mention it, so the fit allows for it without looking baggy on milder days.
  • Side slits: slits that start around the hip let a long kameez sit neatly under a coat and move as you walk. See side slits and hemlines.
  • Necklines: a band collar or high round neck sits neatly with a scarf; a V-neck frames a chunky knit or a shawl.
  • Trousers: straight trousers and cigarette pants sit neatly over ankle boots, while very wide palazzos catch the rain at the hem.
  • Pockets: side-seam pockets are handy when a coat is buttoned over the top. See adding pockets to kurtas.

Colour and ordering

Rust, mustard, olive, plum, bottle green and deep teal all pair easily with camel, navy or black coats. To carry summer prints into autumn, wear them with a plain cardigan in one of the print’s darker shades. Our colour guide helps you pick shades for your skin tone.

When you send your fabric details through the stitching quote form, add a note about the coat or cardigan you plan to wear with it, and upload a photo if you can; it helps us suggest the right sleeve and length. Common questions

What do you wear over a kurta in autumn?

A fine-knit cardigan, a longline coat or a wool shawl are the easiest layers over a kurta. Choose a coat that ends a little below the kameez hem, or a cardigan in a plain colour picked from the kurta’s print.

Which sleeves work best under a coat?

Fitted or straight sleeves work best under a coat, in full or three-quarter length. Wide bell and bishop sleeves bunch inside coat sleeves, so they are better kept for indoor occasions.

Can I wear a lawn kurta in autumn?

Yes, on milder days, with a cardigan, closed shoes and perhaps a lining. For colder weeks, cambric, dobby or light khaddar will be more comfortable.
