Can you wear shalwar kameez to a Western wedding?

Can you wear shalwar kameez to an English or Western wedding? Yes, as a guest. Colours to avoid, how much embroidery is enough, and when to ask the couple.

Yes, with the usual guest courtesies

Yes, a smart shalwar kameez or kurta set is good guest wear at an English or other Western wedding, whether in a church, a registry office or a hotel reception. It just follows the same courtesies as any guest outfit: no white or ivory, nothing that competes with the couple, and a formality that matches the day.

Most couples are pleased to see guests in their own traditional dress, and a well-cut suit often draws compliments. The questions worth thinking about are colour, how much shine and embroidery, and the venue.

Colours to leave out

At a Western wedding, the bride usually wears white or ivory, so the one firm rule for guests is to avoid those shades all over. That includes cream, champagne and very pale blush that photographs as white. A pale kurta with strong coloured embroidery is fine; a plain ivory one is not.

Red is generally acceptable at a Western wedding, although some guests feel it draws attention. If the couple have South Asian heritage, family custom about red may apply too. All-black was once avoided at daytime weddings, but is widely worn now, especially in the evening.

How much embroidery reads as guest

Western wedding guests usually dress more simply than guests at a Pakistani wedding. An outfit with dense gold embroidery all over, a long trailing dupatta and a full gharara can look as though you are part of the wedding party. Aim for one area of detail and a calm overall look.

  • Daytime ceremony: delicate embroidery at the neckline or sleeves, in cotton silk, chiffon or a good print.
  • Evening reception: detailed embroidery and a little more sheen is fine.
  • Dupatta: a light one worn on one shoulder, or none at all with a straight kameez and trousers.

Church, registry office and reception

In a church, covered shoulders are traditionally appreciated, which a kameez already gives you, and a dupatta can double as a cover if needed. You will sit in pews and stand several times, so a calf length and trousers you can move in are comfortable.

A registry office ceremony is short and the room is often small; a smart kurta set is enough. Receptions in marquees or gardens mean grass and gravel, so keep the hem clear of the ground and choose flat or block heels. Our summer garden party outfits cover outdoor events in more detail.

When to ask, and ordering

Ask the couple if the invitation names a dress code you are unsure of, if there is a colour theme, or if you are part of the wedding party. Otherwise, go ahead.

For a custom stitching order, say in your quote request that it is for a Western wedding, the time of day, the fabric and embroidery level, and the length. We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. Making takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment, and shipping time is added.

Common questions

Will I look overdressed in a shalwar kameez?

Not if you match the formality of the day. A lightly embroidered suit in a good fabric sits comfortably beside dresses and suits. Heavy embroidery and a full dupatta are what can tip it over.

Is a kurta with trousers enough for a registry office?

Usually, yes. A plain or lightly embroidered kurta set in a smart fabric is the equivalent of a day dress, which is what most registry office guests wear.

Do I need a hat or fascinator?

No. Hats are common at some English weddings, but they are never required. A dupatta or a neat headscarf, if you usually wear one, is just as appropriate.
