Grass, smoke and sudden showers
- Hems: a straight hem at the knee or calf stays clean; floor-length kameez and trousers pick up grass stains and wet the moment you cross a lawn.
- Colour: pure white and pale ivory show grass and barbecue marks quickly. Mid tones and prints are far more forgiving.
- Smoke: keep loose dupattas and wide sleeves well away from the grill, and pin the dupatta if you are helping cook.
- Sun: elbow or three-quarter sleeves protect your arms without trapping heat; a light dupatta covers your shoulders in the afternoon.
- Rain: in a northern summer, pack a light cardigan or denim jacket. Cotton dries far quicker than heavy silk if you are caught in a shower.
When the barbecue is yours
Hosting a summer gathering is a different job from attending one. You will be carrying platters, refilling drinks, keeping an eye on the grill and greeting guests at the gate, often all at once. A knee-length kurta with side pockets, slim or straight trousers that do not catch on garden chairs, and sleeves that roll or sit at the elbow make the afternoon much easier.
Choose a fabric that can go straight into the machine that evening. A busy print in lawn or cambric hides oil splashes and charcoal smudges far better than a delicate plain colour, and it still looks put together when the photographs come out.
What to ask for in your quote
Choose breathable fabric (lawn, cambric, voile or linen), an embroidery level of none or delicate, and a length that suits the venue: knee for a park, calf for a smarter garden party. If your fabric is pale and fine, ask about a light lining so it is not see-through in bright sun. Say in your notes that the outfit is for outdoor events, and if you are unsure about sleeves or trouser style, choose “advise me”.
