Capri trousers with a kurti: where should they end?

Capri with kurti: capris stop around mid-calf, so a hip or mid-thigh kurti usually balances them. How capris differ from cigarette pants and culottes.

Just below the calf, under a shorter kurti

Capri trousers usually end somewhere between mid-calf and a little below it, and they look most balanced with a kurti that stops at the hip or mid-thigh. That leaves a clear stretch of trouser between the two hems, so the outfit reads as two deliberate pieces rather than a long top with a short glimpse of leg underneath.

Where the capri ends matters more than with full-length trousers, because the hem draws a line across the leg. Many people prefer the point just below the fullest part of the calf, where the leg starts to narrow, to the widest part itself. A hem there looks intentional and lets the trouser taper neatly.

Capri, cigarette pants and culottes compared

These three are often confused in shop listings, so it helps to know what each name normally means.

  • Capri: a slim or straight trouser cropped around mid-calf. The name comes from the Italian island of Capri, where the style became fashionable in the 1950s.
  • Cigarette pants: slim and straight, ending at or just above the ankle bone. They are longer than a capri and suit almost any kurti length. See the cigarette pants page.
  • Culottes: cropped at a similar length but wide in the leg, so they swing like a skirt. Our culottes vs palazzo article compares them with the full-length wide trouser.
  • Cropped straight trousers: a straight trouser cut short. Wider than a capri, with the leg falling straight from the hip.

Which kurti length goes with a capri

The gap between the kurti hem and the capri hem is what keeps the proportion. Here is how the usual lengths behave.

  • Hip-length kurti or short peplum: most of the capri is on show, which looks light and casual. Our peplum and short kurti guide has shapes to try.
  • Mid-thigh kurta: the classic pairing, still leaving the knee and upper calf visible.
  • Knee-length kurta: leaves only a short band of trouser. It works best with a plain, fitted capri and side slits in the kurta.
  • Calf-length kameez: covers the capri hem completely, so ankle-length trousers are the better choice.

Fabric, comfort and climate

Capris are a warm-weather trouser, so breathable cotton, cambric and linen blends are the usual fabrics. A little stretch helps a slim capri move over the knee when you sit or climb stairs; without it, a short slit at the outer hem gives the same freedom. Flat sandals, loafers and slim trainers all suit the cropped length. In colder weather, the bare lower leg is the obvious drawback, which is why many people switch to ankle-length cigarette pants for autumn and winter.

What to send when ordering

Capri is not a named trouser style on our quote form, which lists shalwar, straight, cigarette, wide-leg, sharara, gharara and churidar. Choose straight or cigarette, then say in the notes that you want a calf-length finish and give the length from your waist to the point where the hem should fall. Add your calf measurement at that point and your knee, so the leg tapers to suit you. The trouser size guide and measuring for each trouser style show where to measure.

We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. Order through custom stitching and ask for a quote with a photo of the length you like.

Common questions

Are capris the same as three-quarter trousers?

The names are often used for the same thing. Three-quarter trousers sometimes end just below the knee, while capris tend to sit lower on the calf. Because sellers use both loosely, give the exact length you want rather than relying on the name.

Can I wear capris with a long kameez?

You can, but a kameez that reaches the calf hides the capri almost entirely, so the trouser adds nothing to the look. Ankle-length trousers or a shalwar suit a long kameez better.

Do capri trousers suit petite women?

They can. A slim cut, a hem just below the widest part of the calf and shoes close to your skin tone or trouser colour all keep the leg looking longer. A short kurti helps too.
