Chand raat outfit ideas: comfortable, colourful and mehndi-ready
Chand raat outfit ideas for the night before Eid: comfortable kurtas for bazaars and mehndi, sleeves that stay clear of wet henna, colours, layers and when to order.
InspirationThe night before Eid
Chand raat, or chaand raat, is the “night of the moon”: the evening before Eid ul-Fitr, when the new moon is sighted and Eid is confirmed for the next day. For many families it is one of the most joyful nights of the year, with mehndi on the hands, bangles, late-night bazaars and markets, last-minute shopping and cooking for the morning.
The chand raat outfit is not the Eid outfit. It needs to be comfortable for a long, busy evening, practical around wet mehndi and cooking, and pretty enough for photos. And because nobody knows for certain which night it will be until the moon is sighted, it should be ready a day or two early.
Outfit ideas
- A bright printed lawn or cotton kurta: yellows, greens, pinks and oranges are popular for mehndi nights and look lovely in photos.
- Kurta with wide trousers or a shalwar: easy to sit cross-legged in while someone applies your mehndi.
- A short kurta with a gharara or sharara: a playful, festive look without the weight of a full Eid outfit. See gharara and sharara for Eid.
- Mirror work, gota or tassels on the dupatta: a little sparkle for the bazaar, kept to the dupatta so the kurta stays washable. See dupatta finishing ideas.
- Last Eid’s outfit, restyled: a new dupatta finish or shorter sleeves can turn a previous outfit into a chand raat one. See restyling an old suit.
Mehndi-friendly details
Fresh mehndi needs time to dry, and it can mark fabric. A few details make the evening easier.
- Short, elbow or three-quarter sleeves stay clear of your hands and wrists; full sleeves with a cuff that unbuttons and rolls back work too.
- Darker or busier prints hide the odd mark better than white or pastels.
- A dupatta you can slip off and put aside while the mehndi dries.
- Washable fabrics such as lawn, cotton and cambric, rather than delicate chiffon or silk.
- Pockets, so you are not holding your phone with mehndi-covered hands. See adding pockets to kurtas.
- Room for bangles: a sleeve that ends above the wrist, or a cuff that opens, shows off a stack of bangles and keeps the fabric from snagging on them.
Weather and layers
Chand raat moves through the seasons with Eid, and in the UK, much of Europe and the northern USA the evenings can be cold even in spring. Plan a layer that goes with the outfit: a cardigan or shawl in a colour taken from the print, or a long coat over a short kurta and sharara. Hands covered in fresh mehndi make buttons difficult, so choose a layer that simply slips on.
If you will be out at a bazaar late at night, comfortable flat shoes and trousers that clear the pavement make a long night easier. Henna marks on fabric can be stubborn, so treat any smudges quickly; our stain guide has tips.
Ordering alongside your Eid outfit
Since chand raat is the night before Eid, the simplest plan is to order both outfits together, with one set of measurements and, once we have confirmed what to send, one parcel of fabric. On the stitching quote form, give the earliest likely date as your needed-by date and mark it as fixed.
We do not give delivery dates for Eid orders in advance: the timing for your order is confirmed in your written quote, so order early. Our Eid planning timeline and Eid page help you plan, and the unstitched suit stitching page explains the service.
Common questions
What do you wear on chand raat?
Something comfortable, colourful and washable, such as a bright printed lawn or cotton kurta with wide trousers or a shalwar. Choose shorter or roll-up sleeves if you are having mehndi applied, and bring a layer for cold evenings.
When should my chand raat outfit be ready?
A day or two before the earliest possible date. Chand raat depends on the moon sighting, so it can come a day sooner than some calendars suggest.
Can I wear my Eid outfit on chand raat?
You can, but many people keep the Eid outfit fresh for the morning and wear something simpler the night before, especially with mehndi and cooking in the mix. A lighter kurta in the same colour family links the two nicely.
