Cigarette pants vs pencil trousers: any difference?

Pencil trouser vs cigarette pants: the labels overlap, though pencil usually means the tighter cut. Specify taper, hem width, length and ankle opening instead.

The short answer

There is no fixed difference: both are slim trousers that narrow towards the ankle, and many shops use the two names for the same thing. When sellers do draw a line, pencil trousers are the tighter of the pair, following the leg closely all the way down and often cut in a fabric with stretch, while cigarette pants keep a little ease and a straighter narrow leg that ends around the ankle bone.

Because the labels overlap, the name tells a tailor less than a handful of plain details. The rest of this answer explains which ones to give.

Where the two names come from

Cigarette pants are named after the slim, tube-like shape of a cigarette, and the name is linked with the neat, ankle-length trousers that became fashionable in the 1950s and 1960s. The emphasis is on a clean, narrow line rather than a skin-close fit.

Pencil trousers borrow their name from the pencil skirt: narrow, straight and close to the body. In many Pakistani and Indian shops, a pencil trouser is the fitted, often stretchy trouser sold to wear under a kurta, sitting somewhere between a tailored cigarette pant and a legging. Our cigarette pants guide compares the slim style with straight trousers; here the question is only how the two slim names differ.

Five details that matter more than the name

Whichever word you use, these are the choices that decide how the trousers look and feel. Write them in your notes and the label stops mattering.

  • Taper: where the leg starts to narrow (from the hip, the thigh or the knee) and how sharply. A late, gentle taper reads as cigarette; a taper from high on the leg reads as pencil.
  • Ease at thigh and knee: close to the body or with a little room. Give your thigh at its fullest point, and say if you sit cross-legged or on the floor often.
  • Hem width: the measurement round the trouser bottom. It has to pass over your heel, so measure round your heel and the top of your foot with the foot pointed. Anything narrower needs an opening.
  • Length: to the ankle bone, just above it, or cropped higher (often called seven-eighths). Measure in the shoes you will wear most.
  • Ankle opening: a plain hem, a short side or front slit, small buttons, a zip or a lace edge. Our trouser size guide shows where the length and bottom are measured.

Fabric decides how close it can go

A woven fabric with no stretch cannot sit as close as a stretch fabric without pulling at the seat and knee when you sit or climb stairs. So a very close pencil fit in plain cotton or cambric usually needs either some stretch in the cloth or a little more ease than the photo suggests. Lawn is light enough for summer but creases at the knee in a slim cut. Any fabric for a close trouser is worth checking for shrinkage before it is cut.

Both styles sit neatly under a long straight or A-line kameez with side slits, where only the lower leg shows. A tighter pencil leg shows its outline through the slits as you walk, which some people like and others do not. The kameez length and trouser pairing guide covers the wider picture.

Ordering a slim trouser

Our quote form lists “Cigarette” as a trouser style; “pencil” is not a separate option. Pick Cigarette and add notes for a closer leg, or send a photo, or measure a pair you already like and give us its thigh, knee and hem. You can order trousers alone or as part of a suit, in our fabric or yours through custom stitching. We confirm what is possible on your fabric in the written quote. Common questions

Are pencil trousers the same as leggings?

No. Leggings are pulled on, usually in a knit fabric, with no real hem shaping. Pencil trousers are cut and sewn like other trousers, with a waistband and a finished hem, even when the fabric has some stretch.

What hem width should I ask for on slim trousers?

Start from your foot rather than a chart. Point your foot and measure round the heel and the top of the foot; the hem must be at least that, or have a slit or zip. A pair you already find easy to put on gives you a reliable figure to copy.

Can I sit on the floor comfortably in cigarette pants?

Yes, if there is enough ease at the seat, thigh and knee. Very tight pencil trousers in a fabric without stretch pull when you sit cross-legged, so mention it in your notes if you often sit that way.
