Coat-style abaya: structure, collars and fastenings
A coat style abaya explained: set-in sleeves, collars and lapels, buttons, shaping seams, vents and pockets, and how to describe one for a made to measure quote.
InspirationWhat makes it a coat style abaya
A coat style abaya is built like a long coat rather than a robe. Instead of one wide, flowing shape, it has a defined shoulder, set-in sleeves, a proper front closure and often a collar or lapels. Many have shaping seams that bring it gently in at the waist before it flares or falls straight to the hem.
It is the most tailored of the abaya cuts, popular for work, travel and cooler weather, and it suits anyone who likes a neat, structured outline. A coat cut can be made to your measurements and agreed in your written quote, with the fabric, closure and collar confirmed before cutting.
Fastenings and fronts
The front closure decides how formal the abaya looks. The common choices:
- Single-breasted buttons: one row of visible buttons, the classic coat look.
- Concealed placket: the buttons sit behind a fold of fabric for a smooth, minimal front.
- Double-breasted: two rows of buttons and a deep overlap, smart and warm.
- Press studs or hooks: invisible, and quick to do up.
- Belt only: an open front closed by a self-fabric belt, softer and more relaxed.
Collars and lapels
A collar is what makes a coat abaya read as a coat from across the room. A notched lapel looks like a tailored jacket; a shawl collar rolls smoothly from neck to waist with no notch; a band collar stands up neatly around the neck and suits a hijab well; and a collarless round or V neck keeps the look simple. Our band collar guide and collar styles article show shapes that translate well to abayas, and abaya collars and necklines looks at them on abayas specifically.
Shape, seams and movement
A coat abaya usually has some shaping. Princess seams, which run from the shoulder or armhole down over the bust, let it follow the body without darts and give a long, slim line. A straight cut falls from the shoulders with only gentle side shaping. An A-line version widens steadily towards the hem; our A-line abaya article explains that cut.
Because a coat style is more fitted than a robe, it needs room to walk. Ask for a back vent or side slits from about knee height, or enough flare at the hem, so you can take full strides and climb stairs comfortably. Set-in sleeves also need the right armhole depth: too high and they pinch, too low and the whole abaya lifts when you raise your arm. Your measurements and the ease you prefer set both; our article on ease explains how much difference a few centimetres make.
Pockets, cuffs and practical touches
An abaya with pockets is far easier to live in, and a coat cut is the natural place for them. Side-seam pockets are almost invisible; welt or flap pockets on the front are a deliberate coat detail. Cuffs can be plain, buttoned or turned back. A lining helps a coat abaya slide over clothes and hang cleanly, and a hanging loop inside the neck is a small, useful extra. Mention any of these in your notes and we confirm them in the quote.
Ordering a coat-style abaya from the UK and elsewhere
The coat abaya is especially practical in the UK, where it can replace a light coat for much of the year. UK customers are quoted in pounds sterling, and the custom design page for the UK explains how to send a design. Elsewhere, choose your country on the quote form or browse the locations list.
The custom abayas page explains both ways to order. Upload a photo of a coat abaya you like and list the closure, collar, pockets and length. You can ask us to supply the fabric or send your own once we have confirmed it. The quote covers delivery and any import charges, and production takes 5 to 7 working days after you approve and pay.
Common questions
What is a coat style abaya?
It is an abaya built like a long coat, with defined shoulders, set-in sleeves, a front closure such as buttons or press studs, and often a collar or lapels.
Can a coat abaya have pockets?
Yes. Side-seam pockets are the most discreet; front welt or flap pockets look more like a tailored coat. Ask for them in your quote.
How do I walk comfortably in a fitted abaya?
Ask for a back vent, side slits from around the knee or a little flare at the hem, so the abaya does not restrict your stride.
