Colours that suit September to November

Fall colours are deep and warm, and they photograph well in low light. Think wine, burgundy, rust, mustard, bottle green, plum, chocolate and deep teal. Gold thread on any of these looks rich without needing heavy jewellery. Softer fall colours such as dusty rose, sage or champagne work well for a daytime ceremony.

Sleeves, length and layers

Full or three-quarter sleeves are the easiest answer to a cold evening, and they also suit a modest outfit without any extra layer. If you love a sheer sleeve, ask for it lined so it is warmer and less see-through. Floor length looks the most formal for an evening reception, but measure it in the shoes you will wear, because a long hem on wet leaves or stone steps is no fun.

For layers, a dupatta or a shawl in the same colour family looks far better than a coat over a formal outfit in photos. A long embroidered frock with a matching dupatta is warm enough for most fall evenings indoors.

• Daytime ceremony: a long dress or a three-piece suit in a softer colour
• Rehearsal dinner or mehndi: a co-ord set or a kaftan, also spelled caftan, in a warm colour

Formal and black tie fall weddings

When the invitation says formal or black tie, choose floor length, a deeper colour and more embroidery. A long, flared anarkali is a good fit for this: it looks dressed up, it covers you from neck to ankle, and it is comfortable through a long dinner. A Pakistani frock with work on the neckline and sleeves is the other classic choice.

If you prefer a Western shape, a long dress with sleeves and a defined waist works too. The point is that it looks like evening wear, so go for a richer finish than you would for a daytime event.

We make every outfit in Pakistan to your own measurements. Making takes 5 to 7 working days once your written quote is approved and paid in full, and then it is shipped to your door.
