National Day colours in Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain

Saudi National Day is green, Qatar’s is maroon and white, Kuwait’s uses all four flag colours and Bahrain’s is red and white. Wearing them on a kameez or abaya.

The short answer

For Saudi National Day, women wear green, usually with white, the colours of the Saudi flag. Qatar’s National Day colour is maroon, with white. Kuwait celebrates in its four flag colours, green, white, red and black, and Bahrain in red and white. Oman, whose National Day falls in November, uses red, white and green. In every case the easiest outfit is a kameez or abaya that carries the colour rather than one that copies the flag.

Country by country, with the season

The dates fall in very different weather, which matters as much as the colour.

  • Saudi Arabia, 23 September: green and white. Late September is still hot in most of the country, so light, breathable fabric matters; our guide to fabrics for Riyadh and Jeddah helps. The flag carries the declaration of faith, which is one reason many people choose plain green and white rather than wearing the flag itself. See the Saudi Arabia page.
  • Qatar, 18 December: maroon and white. Mid-December days are mild and evenings cool, so cotton silk or a lined kameez works well. See the Qatar page.
  • Kuwait, 25 February, followed by Liberation Day on 26 February: green, white, red and black. Late February evenings can be chilly; our article on winter suits for Kuwait covers warmer fabrics. See the Kuwait page.
  • Bahrain, 16 December: red and white. The weather is like Qatar’s, mild by day and cooler at night. See the Bahrain page.
  • Oman, November: red, white and green, with warm days and pleasant evenings. See the Oman page.

Carrying the colour without wearing a flag

A flag printed on fabric rarely looks like a considered outfit, and four colours at once can look busy. These approaches look festive and still work for a dinner the following week.

  • One colour, head to toe: a green kameez for Saudi Arabia or a maroon one for Qatar, with white trousers and a white or tonal dupatta.
  • The dupatta does the work: a neutral kameez with a dupatta in the national colour, which you can reuse for other occasions.
  • Thread and trim: a black or white kameez with embroidery or piping and trims in the flag colours at the neckline and cuffs. This suits Kuwait’s four colours especially well.
  • On an abaya: a black abaya with a coloured trim at the cuffs or front edge, or a coloured inner layer that shows at the opening. Our guide to black or coloured abayas has more.

Ordering for a fixed date

National Days do not move, so they are easy to plan for. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from the approval and full payment of your quote, and shipping is added after that. For an abaya, custom abayas explains what you can ask for; for coloured embroidery on a kameez, custom embroidery explains the levels we offer, and what is possible on your fabric and design is confirmed in your quote. Gulf customers choose a quote in USD, EUR or GBP, and you can request a quote whenever you are ready.

Common questions

Can I ask for an exact shade of maroon or green?

You can describe the shade and send a photo, and the written quote confirms the fabric. Colours can look slightly different between photos, screens and real cloth, so a small difference in shade is normal.

Is it better to wear the national colour or a neutral outfit?

Either is fine. Many people wear the colour on the day itself and something neutral to gatherings in the days around it, which is why a coloured dupatta over a neutral kameez is such a useful choice.

Does the UAE follow the same pattern?

The UAE has its own National Day in early December, with its own flag colours of red, green, white and black. The approaches here, one colour, a coloured dupatta or coloured thread, work just as well there.
