How to tone down a loud print in a suit

How to tone down a busy print in a suit you already own: keep it to the kameez, add plain trousers in its darkest shade, plain panels and a quieter dupatta.

The quickest fixes

To tone down a loud print, use less of it and surround it with calm: keep the print for the kameez only, pair it with plain trousers in the print’s darkest shade, and swap the matching printed dupatta for a plain or very quiet one. If the print still feels like too much, break it up with plain panels at the yoke, sleeves or hem. All of this works with fabric you already have, such as a gifted unstitched suit that is not quite your style.

If you are planning a printed outfit from scratch, pairing printed and plain pieces is the place to start. This article is for rescuing a print that is already in your cupboard.

Step one: decide where the print goes

Many unstitched suits arrive printed head to toe: kameez, trousers and dupatta all in the same busy design. Wearing all three is where the loudness comes from. Choose one piece to carry the print, usually the kameez, and set the printed trousers and dupatta aside for another outfit. A printed dupatta from a loud suit often looks lovely on its own over a plain kurta.

Step two: borrow the darkest colour

Look closely at the print and pick out its deepest shade, often a navy, bottle green, maroon or charcoal that appears only in the outlines. Plain trousers in that shade anchor the print and make it look deliberate. A lighter plain colour from the print works too, but dark trousers do more to calm it. Our guide to buying a plain fabric to match a printed piece explains how to find a shade that matches and a weight that suits the print.

Step three: add plain areas to the kameez

If you have a plain fabric as well, the kameez itself can be designed to show less print. Ideas to describe in your order:

  • A plain yoke across the shoulders, so the area nearest the face is calm. See yokes and panels.
  • Plain sleeves with the print kept to the body, or the reverse for a mostly plain kameez.
  • A plain hem border or daaman band, which frames the print and gives it an edge.
  • A plain placket or neckline facing, a small touch that still breaks up a dense print.
  • A simple cut. A straight kameez shows the print flat; gathers, frills and flares multiply it.

Step four: a quiet dupatta, and getting it made

Finish with a plain dupatta in the trouser colour, a soft neutral such as ivory or grey, or a tonal shade a step lighter than the trousers. Avoid a second strong print.

To have the outfit made, send us the printed fabric together with the plain fabric you have chosen through our Stitching Only service, once we have confirmed both are suitable and there is enough. Describe or sketch where the plain panels go, and the design is agreed in your written quote before cutting. Making takes 5 to 7 working days once your fabric reaches us and the quote is approved and paid, plus shipping time. Start a Stitching Only quote.

Common questions

Can I tone down a print without buying more fabric?

Often, yes. Using only the printed kameez with plain trousers and a plain dupatta you already own changes the look a lot. Plain panels in the kameez itself do need a second fabric.

What colour trousers calm a busy floral?

The darkest colour in the print usually works hardest, because it ties the trousers to the print and gives the eye somewhere to rest. Ivory or a soft grey are gentler alternatives for summer.

Does lining make a bright print look softer?

On a thin fabric it can change the colour slightly. A lining in a muted shade can deepen a bright lawn print a little, while a white lining keeps it bright. Ask about lining colour in your quote.
