Is it safe to send your measurements and photos online?
Is it safe to send measurements online? What a tailor actually needs, what is optional, how the details are used, and how to ask for them to be deleted afterwards.
InspirationGenerally yes, with sensible limits
Sending your body measurements to a tailor is generally low risk: they are numbers, used to cut a garment, and they mean little to anyone else. The care is needed around what you send alongside them. A tailor working from measurements does not need photos of your body, and you can decline if one is requested.
Below is what is needed, what is optional and what to ask any maker before you share.
What a tailor needs
To quote and make an outfit, a maker working at a distance needs only a handful of things. None of them is a photo of you.
- Measurements, in inches or centimetres, as numbers.
- Design images: a reference photo, a screenshot, a sketch or a written description.
- Fabric photos, if you are sending your own fabric.
- Contact details and your country and city, so the quote can include delivery.
- A full delivery address, but only once the order goes ahead.
What is optional
Some things can help but are your choice. A garment that fits you, measured or photographed laid flat on a table, is a useful reference and shows nothing personal; our page on sending a sample kameez explains how a garment is used. Notes about posture or fit preferences can be written rather than photographed. If you want to share a photo wearing a garment, crop out your face; the fit is what matters.
If you are unsure how to take the numbers, our measuring help covers it without anyone needing to see you.
Questions to ask any maker
Whoever you order from, these questions tell you how your details are treated:
- Who sees my measurements and images, and where is the work done?
- How long are my details kept, and why?
- Can I ask for them to be deleted after delivery?
- Will photos of my finished outfit be used for marketing, and can I say no?
- Are details shared with anyone else, such as a courier, and for what?
How we handle your details
Our quote form asks for measurements, design images and the details needed to quote; your full address is collected only when your order goes ahead. The details needed to make and ship your order are used in Pakistan, where it is made, and the courier receives what it needs to deliver it. We keep order records, including measurements and photos, as long as needed for your order, and longer only to make repeat orders easier if you have asked us to. Ask at any time and we delete them, unless a record must be kept for legal or accounting reasons. All of this is in our privacy notice.
We may photograph finished pieces for our portfolio; tell us when you order if you would rather we did not. When you are comfortable, read about custom stitching and start your quote.
Common questions
Can my measurements identify me?
On their own, a set of numbers says very little about who you are. They become personal when stored with your name and contact details, which is why it is worth knowing how long a maker keeps them.
Is it safer to send details by email or through a website form?
Both are common and reasonably safe for this kind of information. What matters more is that you send only what is needed and know who receives it.
Should I send my measurements over a messaging app?
You can, but they are easy to lose in a long chat. A form or an email keeps them in one place, which also helps avoid mistakes.
