Kameez length in inches: where 36 to 46 inches end

Kameez length in inches, from 36 to 46: roughly where each one ends on petite, average and tall heights, with centimetres and a tape test to check on yourself.

The short answer: 38 to 40 inches is knee length at average height

On a woman of about 5 ft 4 in (163 cm), a kameez of 38 inches (97 cm) ends around the knee and 40 inches (102 cm) just below it. A 36 inch (91 cm) kameez sits just above the knee, and 44 to 46 inches (112 to 117 cm) reaches the middle to lower calf. Every figure here is measured the usual tailoring way: from the highest point of the shoulder, right beside the neck, straight down the front to the hem.

These are typical landing points, not a size chart. Two women of the same height can differ by an inch or two because of a longer body, a fuller bust or sloping shoulders, so confirm the numbers with the tape test further down.

Where each length lands at 5 ft 0, 5 ft 4 and 5 ft 8

Read across for your nearest height: 5 ft 0 in is 152 cm, 5 ft 4 in is 163 cm and 5 ft 8 in is 173 cm. As a rough rule, every extra 2 inches (5 cm) of height lifts the same hem by about 1 inch (2.5 cm).

  • 36 inches (91 cm): just below the knee at 5 ft 0; just above the knee at 5 ft 4; lower thigh at 5 ft 8.
  • 38 inches (97 cm): a little below the knee at 5 ft 0; on the knee at 5 ft 4; just above the knee at 5 ft 8.
  • 40 inches (102 cm): upper calf at 5 ft 0; just below the knee at 5 ft 4; on the knee at 5 ft 8.
  • 42 inches (107 cm): mid-calf at 5 ft 0; upper calf at 5 ft 4; just below the knee at 5 ft 8.
  • 44 inches (112 cm): lower calf at 5 ft 0; mid-calf at 5 ft 4; upper calf at 5 ft 8.
  • 46 inches (117 cm): close to the ankle at 5 ft 0; lower calf at 5 ft 4; towards mid-calf at 5 ft 8.

Shorter kurtis, longer lengths and the “standard” question

There is no single standard kameez length. Ready-to-wear shirts follow fashion, which swings between shorter and longer from season to season, and most fall between about 36 and 44 inches. Outside that classic range, these are the usual figures at average height:

  • 24 to 28 inches (61 to 71 cm): hip length, the short kurti worn with jeans or wide trousers.
  • 30 to 34 inches (76 to 86 cm): mid-thigh, a relaxed everyday kurta.
  • Ankle length: roughly 49 inches (124 cm) at 5 ft 0, 52 inches (132 cm) at 5 ft 4 and 56 inches (142 cm) at 5 ft 8.
  • Floor length: about 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) more than ankle length, plus the height of your heel.

The tape test: check a number on yourself

If the body and garment results differ, trust the garment for a style you already wear and the tape for a new length. Our guide to using a kameez that fits as your template covers the flat method, and the size guide shows the shoulder point on a sketch.

  • Stand straight at a mirror in the shoes you plan to wear, looking ahead.
  • Hold the end of the tape at the top of your shoulder where it meets your neck, about where a shoulder seam would sit.
  • Let the tape fall over the fullest part of your bust and hang freely.
  • Read where 36, 38, 40 and the rest land on your leg, or ask a helper to read them, since bending to look shortens the measurement.
  • Cross-check with a kameez you like: lay it flat and measure from the shoulder seam beside the neck straight down to the hem.

Giving us the length

On a made-to-measure order the kameez length is yours to choose, in inches or centimetres; our inches to cm table converts between them. Give the number and, if you like, the landing point you are aiming for, such as “just below the knee”, so the two can be checked against each other. For which length suits which height, see kameez length for your height.

A long kameez with full sleeves can need more fabric than a standard suit piece holds, so with your own fabric we confirm the length is possible before you post anything. Start with the custom stitching page or the quote form; the length is agreed in writing before cutting.

Common questions

Is a 40 inch kurti knee length?

On an average height of about 5 ft 4 in (163 cm), 40 inches ends just below the knee. On a petite frame of about 5 ft it reaches the upper calf, and on a tall frame of about 5 ft 8 in it sits on the knee.

Is kameez length measured from the shoulder or from the back of the neck?

In shalwar kameez tailoring it is normally measured down the front from the highest point of the shoulder, beside the neck. Some Western dress charts measure down the back from the nape instead, so say which method you used.

Should I add a hem allowance to the length I give?

No. Give the finished length you want to see when the kameez is worn; the cutter adds seam and hem allowances.
