Kurta and trouser sets: a two-piece that stands alone

How to plan a made-to-measure kurta and trouser set that looks complete without a dupatta: necklines, sleeves, matching or contrast trousers and the right fabrics.

A set that does not need a third piece

A kurta and trouser set is a two-piece outfit: a kurta or kameez with trousers made to go with it, and no dupatta. Because nothing is draped over the top, the kurta has to look finished on its own, so the neckline, the sleeves and the length carry more of the outfit than they would in a three-piece suit. Plan those three details well and a two-piece set looks deliberate, not like a suit with a piece missing.

Two-piece sets are practical for work, travel and warm days, and they suit anyone who finds a dupatta gets in the way. If you are deciding what to buy in the first place, our guide to two-piece and three-piece unstitched suits compares them.

Giving the kurta enough interest

Without a dupatta, the eye goes straight to the neckline and the front of the kurta. A little detail there goes a long way.

  • A finished neckline: a band collar, a round neck with a slit and buttons, or a neckline with lace gives the top a focal point.
  • A placket or buttons: a visible placket adds a vertical line that lengthens the body; our plackets and buttons guide shows the options.
  • Sleeves with a detail: a cuff, a scalloped edge or a border at the wrist balances the neckline.
  • Length: knee length or just above is the easiest for a two-piece, long enough to feel like a suit and short enough to show the trousers.
  • Coverage: if you normally rely on a dupatta for modesty, choose a slightly higher neckline and a fuller cut over the bust.

Matching or contrasting trousers

Trousers in the same fabric and colour make the set read as one long line, which is flattering and smart for the office. A contrast colour taken from the kurta print feels more relaxed and lets you wear each piece with other things. A plain kurta with printed trousers is a less common combination that looks fresh in summer.

For shape, straight trousers and cigarette pants keep a two-piece set tidy, a shalwar makes it more traditional, and wide-leg trousers make it more relaxed. Our co-ord sets guide covers matching tops and trousers in more Western cuts.

Fabrics that work without a dupatta

A two-piece is often an everyday outfit, so choose fabric for how it behaves on a long day.

  • Cambric and cotton: crisp, opaque and easy to wash, good for work sets.
  • Lawn: cool for summer, but pale shades may need lining because there is no dupatta to add cover. See our lawn guide.
  • Linen and textured cottons: smart and breathable, with enough body to hold a straight cut.
  • Khaddar and karandi: for a winter set worn under a coat.

Starting from an unstitched two-piece

Many unstitched collections include two-piece packs with a printed or embroidered shirt and a plain or matching trouser piece. These are made for exactly this outfit. With Stitching Only, you send us the fabric after we have confirmed it is suitable and how much there is, and we cut and stitch it to your measurements. If a three-piece pack has a dupatta you will never wear, the dupatta fabric cannot always become something else, so ask us before you plan around it.

How to order a two-piece set

Choose “Two-piece / co-ord” on the quote form, then pick the neckline, sleeve, length and trouser style, or choose “Advise me”. Upload a photo of the look you like and mention whether the trousers should match or contrast. If you would like us to supply the fabric, start a Fabric + Stitching quote and describe the colour and feel you want.

We deliver worldwide; customers in Canada can read how ordering from Canada works. The written quote shows both pieces, your measurements, delivery and the total before you pay.

Common questions

Is a kurta and trouser set the same as a co-ord?

They overlap. A kurta set is usually a kameez-style top with trousers, while a co-ord often uses more Western shapes, such as a shirt or boxy top with wide trousers. Both are two-piece outfits made to be worn together.

Can I order just a kurta and trousers with no dupatta?

Yes. Choose the two-piece option on the quote form. Single-piece orders are accepted too, so you can also order a kurta on its own.

Should the trousers be the same colour as the kurta?

It depends on the look you want. Matching trousers look sleek and formal, while a colour picked from the kurta print is more relaxed and easier to mix with other clothes.
