A modest capsule wardrobe built from made-to-measure pieces

How to build a modest capsule wardrobe from made-to-measure pieces: the core items, a shared palette, lengths that work together and ordering the set in stages.

Fewer pieces, all of them right

A modest capsule wardrobe is a small set of pieces, usually twelve to fifteen, that all work together and all give the coverage you want, so getting dressed takes minutes. Made to measure suits a capsule especially well: when every top has the same sleeve length you like and every trouser has the same comfortable rise, any piece can go with any other. This guide sets out the core items, how to choose the palette, and how to order the set in stages.

The idea is not to own less for its own sake. It is to stop owning clothes you never wear because the sleeves are short, the slits too high or the fabric sheer.

The core pieces

A starting point for a four-season capsule. Adjust it for your climate and your days.

  • Three long kameez or kurtas: two plain, one printed, all to the same length and sleeve.
  • Two co-ord sets: each one a complete outfit, and each half wearable with other pieces.
  • One full-sleeved maxi or shirt dress: for days when one piece is easier than two.
  • Three pairs of trousers: one straight, one wide or palazzo, one shalwar.
  • One abaya or long open layer, if you wear one, with an inner that stands alone.
  • One dressier three-piece for Eid and gatherings.
  • Two dupattas or large scarves in your neutral colours.
  • One warm layer: a long cardigan or a heavier kameez in khaddar or karandi for winter.

Standardise your measurements and details

The quiet strength of a made-to-measure capsule is consistency. Decide once on your preferred kameez length, sleeve length, slit height, neckline and trouser rise, and use them for every piece. Then every top lands at the same point on every trouser, and nothing needs thinking about in the morning.

Keep a note of these choices with your measurements. Our size guide explains the measurements we use, and design approval explains how every detail is agreed in writing before cutting, so your standard choices are recorded in each quote.

Choosing the palette

Pick two neutrals that suit you and go with each other, such as navy and camel or black and stone, and one or two accent colours for prints, dupattas and the dressier pieces. Let the trousers and outer layers stay neutral; let the kameez and scarves carry the colour. Check that pale pieces will be lined, so the capsule stays opaque in every light.

Mix fabric weights, not just colours: lawn and cotton for summer, cambric for the in-between months, khaddar or karandi for winter. Our everyday page has ideas for simple combinations.

Ordering in stages

You do not need to order fifteen pieces at once. Start with three or four that you would wear most, such as two kameez and two trousers, and live with them for a few weeks. Once the lengths and fit feel right, order the next group with the same details. Single-piece orders are accepted, so you can add one item at a time if you prefer; see ordering one outfit.

With Fabric + Stitching we supply the agreed fabric, which makes it easier to keep a palette consistent across orders. You can also browse our designs for pieces to slot in.

Where you live, and what to expect

Everything is made in Pakistan and shipped worldwide. Customers in Leicester receive quotes in pounds; customers using Fabric + Stitching in Saudi Arabia choose dollars, euros or pounds. Each quote includes delivery and any import charges.

Production takes 5 to 7 working days once a quote is approved and paid in full. To begin, use the Fabric + Stitching quote form, or change the country to your own, and list the first pieces of your capsule with your standard details.

Common questions

How many pieces are in a modest capsule wardrobe?

Usually twelve to fifteen: a few long tops, two co-ords, a dress, three pairs of trousers, an outer layer, a dressier outfit and a couple of scarves. Adjust the mix to your climate and routine.

Can I order a capsule one piece at a time?

Yes. Single-piece orders are accepted. Using the same measurements and preferred details each time keeps every new piece consistent with the ones you already have.

Why is made to measure good for a capsule wardrobe?

Because every piece shares the same lengths, sleeves and trouser fit, any top works with any bottom. Ready-made pieces from different shops rarely line up so neatly.
