Fifteen questions in five groups

The most useful questions to ask a tailor before you order fall into five groups: the fabric, the fit, the dates, the money and what happens if something goes wrong. Ask them in writing, and expect a plain answer to each. Below, every question is followed by our own answer, so you have an example of what a clear reply looks like.

These are the questions you ask. For the details you tell a tailor, such as the garment, the design and your measurements, see how to write an enquiry that gets a clear quote.

Fabric

Start here, because the cloth decides much of everything else.

  • Who supplies the fabric? Ours: either side. With Fabric + Stitching we supply the agreed fabric; with Stitching Only you send your own, such as an unstitched suit.
  • Can I see it before it is cut? Ours: you receive photos and a description of the fabric we suggest, and it is agreed in your written quote. We do not send free samples.
  • Will you check my fabric before I post it? Ours: yes. Suitability, the quantity needed and how to send it are confirmed before you post anything to us in Pakistan.

Fit

Fit questions tell you whether “custom” means your body or a size chart.

  • Do you cut to my measurements or to a size? Ours: to your measurements, sent in centimetres or inches and agreed in writing before cutting.
  • What if I find measuring hard? Ours: our measuring help takes you through it step by step over messages, or you can send a kameez that fits to be measured.
  • Can I try it on before it is finished? Ours: no. We have no shops or studios outside Pakistan, which is why every measurement and design detail is checked in writing first.

Dates

Ask how time is counted, not only how much of it there is.

  • How long does making take? Ours: 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, or from when your fabric reaches us on Stitching Only.
  • How long does delivery take? Ours: shipping time is extra and varies by destination, so plan for it on top of the making time.
  • Can you rush it? Ours: no. We do not take rush orders, so tell us your date and we say honestly whether it is realistic.

Money

Money questions are about what a figure covers as much as the figure itself.

  • How is the price worked out? Ours: every order has its own written quote. There is no price list, apart from the designs that show their own price on their page.
  • What does the total include? Ours: delivery to your address and any import duties, taxes and customs or courier fees, so there is nothing to pay at the door.
  • How and when do I pay? Ours: in full in advance, by bank transfer, Wise or a card payment link, after you approve the quote. UK quotes are in pounds; in the USA, Europe and the Gulf you choose dollars, euros or pounds.

Mistakes and changes of mind

These are the questions people forget, and the ones that matter most when something goes wrong. The full wording is in our terms, and cancelling or reporting a fault explains them in plain words. Once your questions are answered, ask for a quote.

  • What if it does not match what we agreed? Ours: if it does not match the agreed measurements or design, tell us no later than 7 days after delivery and we correct or remake it without charging for the work. You pay the postage both ways.
  • Can I cancel? Ours: before cutting, you are refunded minus the cost of any fabric already bought for your order (nothing is deducted on Stitching Only). Once cutting has started, there is no refund.
  • Will you alter clothes I already own? Ours: no. We make new pieces to measure and do not alter existing garments.

Common questions

Should I ask these questions before or after getting a quote?

Both. Ask the general ones before you enquire, so you know how a tailor works, then check that the written quote answers the ones about your own order: fabric, measurements, total, timing and terms.

What if a tailor answers some questions only by phone?

Ask for the important answers in writing as well, especially the total, what it includes and the terms for faults and cancellations. A written record helps both sides if anything is later remembered differently.

Is it worth asking about care?

Yes. How a fabric should be washed and pressed affects how long the outfit lasts, and the answer can change which fabric or lining you choose.
