Shirt dress or long kurta: what is the difference?

Shirt dress vs kurta: a shirt dress has a collar and buttons to the hem and is worn alone, while a long kurta pulls on over trousers. How to tell them apart.

The short answer

A shirt dress is a dress built like a shirt: a collar, buttons running from the neck to the hem, and enough length and cover to be worn on its own. A long kurta is a tunic that pulls on over the head, has a short opening or none at the neck, and is cut with long side slits because it is meant to sit over trousers. So a kurta is not a shirt dress, although a collared kurta with buttons all the way down sits right on the border between them.

Five places where they differ

Put the two side by side and the same five details give the answer every time.

  • Collar: a shirt dress has a proper shirt collar on a stand, the kind that folds over. A kurta usually has a round neck, a slit neck or a low band collar. Our collar guide shows the shapes.
  • Opening: shirt dresses button from top to hem, so you put them on like a coat. Kurtas have a short placket to the chest at most and go on over the head.
  • Waist: many shirt dresses mark the waist with a belt, a tie, darts or a seam. A kurta falls straight or in an A-line from the bust and has no waist seam.
  • Sides and hem: a kurta has slits that often reach the hip, so it moves freely over trousers. A shirt dress is closed at the sides, with short slits near the hem or a curved shirt-tail hem.
  • Sleeves: shirt dresses borrow the shirt cuff, with a buttoned band and often a tab to hold a rolled sleeve. Kurta sleeves normally end in a plain or trimmed hem.

How each one is worn

The slits are the real test. With side slits to the hip, a kurta shows the leg from the hip down when you walk or sit, so it needs trousers, a shalwar or jeans underneath. A shirt dress is closed far enough down to be worn alone, with tights or leggings if you like.

It works the other way round too. A shirt dress can be worn over slim trousers exactly as a kurta would be, or left unbuttoned as a light layer over a top. A knee-length kurta with short slits can pass as a dress. The names describe how the garment was built more than how you are allowed to wear it.

Fabric follows the same split. Shirt dresses are usually cut in shirting weights such as poplin, chambray, linen or denim, while kurtas come in lawn, cambric, khaddar and other suit fabrics. Nothing stops you swapping them.

Where a tunic fits in

Tunic is the Western word for any long top worn over trousers, usually pulled on over the head and ending between the hip and the knee. By shape, a kurta is a tunic. Shops tend to say tunic for plainer, shorter pieces and kurta for South Asian cuts with slits, plackets and matching trousers. If you are choosing between them for daily wear, our article on tunics and long shirts covers lengths and details.

Which one to order

Choose a shirt dress if you want one piece that works on its own, opens fully at the front and reads as Western or office wear. Choose a long kurta if you always wear trousers underneath, like a dupatta with it, or want the freedom of slits when sitting on the floor.

Our button-front shirt dress has a pointed collar, buttons from top to hem, sleeves that roll up and fasten with a tab, and side slits, so it can be worn either way. There are ideas for styling it here. For a kurta, or a mix of the two such as a collared kurta with buttons to the hem, send a photo or a description. It can be ordered as Fabric + Stitching or with your own fabric, and the written quote confirms what is possible and sets out the agreed design before cutting.

Common questions

Can I wear a shirt dress over trousers like a kurta?

Yes. A long shirt dress sits well over slim or straight trousers, and side slits or a few open buttons at the hem make walking easier. It is a common way to wear one for work or for more cover.

Can a kurta have buttons all the way down?

It can. A button-through kurta opens fully at the front, which is handy for nursing or if you dislike pulling clothes over your head. Ask for it in your quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design.

Is a kurti different from a kurta?

Kurti usually means a shorter kurta, ending around the hip or upper thigh and often worn with jeans. A long kurti and a kurta are the same thing in practice, and shops use both words.
