Skirt co-ords: a matching top and skirt made to measure

A matching skirt and top set that looks like a dress but splits into separates: top length against skirt fullness, one fabric or two, and what to ask for.

A dress that comes apart

A skirt co-ord is a top and a skirt made to be worn together, usually from the same fabric, so the pair reads as one outfit and each half can also be worn with other clothes. The look depends on two choices: how long the top is against how full the skirt is, and whether both pieces share one fabric.

Compared with a dress, a set gives you two garments for different days. Made to measure, it also solves a common problem: if your top half and bottom half are different sizes in shop clothing, each piece is simply cut to its own measurements.

Matching top length to skirt shape

The meeting point between top and skirt is where a co-ord succeeds or looks unplanned. These pairings tend to balance well.

  • Short top, high-waisted skirt. A waist-length top over an A-line or pleated midi shows the waist and looks most like a dress.
  • Tucked blouse, flared skirt. A soft blouse tucked into a gathered or circle skirt gives a defined waist and a full hem.
  • Hip-length top, straight skirt. Worn out over a column or pencil-shaped skirt, it makes a long, narrow line.
  • Peplum top, slim skirt. The flare at the top hem does the work, so keep the skirt plain. Our peplum tops guide covers the shape.
  • Long tunic, full maxi skirt. Possible, but two volumes stacked together can look heavy. Use a soft fabric and a belt, or narrow one of the pieces.

One fabric or two?

One print or one plain colour across both pieces gives the clearest dress effect, and it is what most people mean by a co-ord. Two fabrics in the same colour but different textures, such as a smooth top over a crinkled skirt, look richer while still matching. A plain top with a printed skirt, or the reverse, is the most flexible: the plain half goes with almost anything when you split the set. Our article on pairing printed and plain pieces explains how to balance a print.

A modest two-piece set

For more cover, choose a top with full or three-quarter sleeves that falls past the waistband even when you raise your arms, and a maxi or long midi skirt. A light skirt fabric usually needs a lining to stay opaque in sunlight; read does my kameez need lining for which fabrics benefit. An elasticated waist at the back keeps a long skirt comfortable through a long day.

Wearing the halves separately, and ordering a set

Plan the split before you order. A plain top that fits well will go with jeans, straight trousers and a kurta-length cardigan. A skirt in a neutral colour works with a shirt, a fine jumper or a plain T-shirt. If neither half would ever leave the set, a dress might be the better buy.

To order, send a photo or sketch of the set through Send Your Design, with the waist finish you prefer (elastic, zip or buttons), the skirt length measured with your usual shoes, any lining and pockets. The guide to measuring for a co-ord set lists the measurements for both halves. Start with the design quote form and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in writing.

Common questions

Should the top of a skirt co-ord be tucked in or worn out?

Either, depending on the cut. A short or cropped top is worn out at the waistband; a soft blouse is often tucked; a hip-length top is worn out over a slimmer skirt.

Can a skirt co-ord be in two colours?

Yes. Two shades of one colour, or a plain top with a printed skirt that picks up its colour, still read as a set. Unrelated colours tend to look like separates.

Is a skirt co-ord suitable for work?

In a plain or quiet fabric with a midi or longer skirt, yes. It looks as finished as a dress and gives two pieces for the work rotation.
