Shalwar kameez for tall women: custom lengths
Shalwar kameez for tall women in the US: why pret runs short, the lengths to measure in inches, when an unstitched suit lacks fabric, and long styles that work.
InspirationToo short in all the wrong places
A shalwar kameez for a tall woman needs custom lengths in four places: the kameez, the sleeves, the trouser rise and the trouser hem. Pakistani pret is cut for an average height, so on a taller frame the kameez sits higher than intended, sleeves stop above the wrist and trousers end at the ankle. Made to measure takes every length from your body instead.
In US shops, tall ranges usually start at around five foot eight or nine, and add length throughout. Pakistani brands rarely offer anything similar, which is why many tall women in the US have given up on ready-made suits altogether.
The lengths to measure
Measure in inches or centimetres, in the shoes you plan to wear, and note each of these:
- Kameez length, from the high point of the shoulder to the hem you want.
- Sleeve length, with the arm slightly bent; tall women often need more than they expect.
- Shoulder to waist, so any shaping sits at your real waist rather than above it.
- Rise, from waist to seat; a short rise is the main reason trousers feel uncomfortable on taller frames. Our trouser measurements guide shows how to take it.
- Trouser length, to the point on your foot or shoe where you want the hem to sit.
When an unstitched suit is not long enough
Unstitched suits come with a fixed amount of shirt and trouser fabric, planned around average sizes. A long kameez, full sleeves and long trousers for a tall frame can need more. We check this from your photos and measurements before you post anything. If the fabric is short, there are options, such as a slightly shorter design, a contrasting panel or matching plain fabric; our guide to what to do if your suit is short of fabric walks through them, and trouser fit covers rise and length.
With Fabric + Stitching, quantity is our job: we supply enough of the agreed fabric for your measurements. Our Fabric + Stitching page for the USA explains how.
Long styles that suit tall women
Height lets you wear the longest silhouettes without being swamped. A flared kalidar frock to mid-calf, a long straight kameez with narrow trousers, or an ankle-length maxi all look deliberate rather than overwhelming. For something Western, the tiered maxi dress can be made to measure, so the length is cut for you.
Proportion still matters. A deeper border or a lower-placed embroidery band can balance a very long kameez, and a slightly wider trouser keeps the line from looking spindly.
Sleeves deserve the same attention. A full sleeve that ends at the wrist bone looks deliberate; one that stops short of it looks borrowed. If you prefer shorter sleeves, choose a length that is clearly intentional, such as elbow length, rather than one that looks slightly too short.
Ordering a longer outfit from the US
Write your height in the notes as well as your measurements; it helps us read the numbers in context. If you own a kameez whose length you love, measure it and include that figure too. Production takes 5 to 7 working days once the quote is approved and paid in full, and delivery to your US address, including any import charges, is in the quote.
Start with the Fabric + Stitching quote form, and see the USA page for the full process. Whether you are in Seattle or Minneapolis, it works the same way.
Common questions
Which trouser style suits tall women?
Most styles work. Straight trousers and cigarette pants look sleek under a long kameez, while palazzos and shararas look dramatic. What matters most is a correct rise and a length cut for your shoes.
Can you make an extra-long kameez?
Yes. Every length is cut to your measurements. If you supply an unstitched suit, we first confirm that there is enough fabric for the length you want.
Why do my trousers feel tight at the seat even when the waist fits?
Usually because the rise is too short for your height. Send your rise measurement, from waist to seat, and the trousers are cut to it.
Should I tell you my height?
Yes, please add it to your notes. It helps us check that your lengths make sense together, although the measurements themselves decide the cut.
