UAE National Day outfit ideas in the flag colours

UAE National Day dress ideas for ladies: red, green, white and black on a kameez, co-ord or abaya for the office, the school gate and evenings on 2 December.

Start with one colour, not four

The simplest National Day outfit takes one flag colour as its base, usually white or black, and adds the others as accents: a white kameez with green piping and a red dupatta, a black abaya with a narrow line of red and green at the cuff, or a green co-ord with a white scarf. All four colours in equal blocks tends to look like a costume; a base with one or two accents looks like an outfit you chose.

National Day falls on 2 December, marking the union of the emirates in 1971, and it is now officially called Eid Al Etihad. Offices, schools, malls and neighbourhoods dress up for it, and red, green, white and black, the colours of the flag, are everywhere. Flag Day on 3 November often brings a smaller round of the same.

Ideas by setting

Where you will spend the day decides how loud the outfit should be.

  • The office: a white or ivory kurta with slim black trousers and a single green or red detail, such as piping at the neckline, covered buttons or a scarf. It reads as smart workwear first and National Day second, which suits a day that often includes a team photograph.
  • The school gate: children are often asked to come in national dress or flag colours, and parents join in. A cotton co-ord in green with a white dupatta, or a white kameez over red trousers, is comfortable for standing outdoors.
  • Evening gatherings and fireworks: black comes into its own after dark. A black kameez or abaya with a red dupatta or shawl, or a touch of green at the neckline and sleeves, looks festive without shouting.
  • Family photographs: give each person a different flag colour as the base and repeat one accent across everyone.

On a kameez, a co-ord or an abaya

On a kameez, colour is easiest to control in the trims: piping, a contrast facing inside the sleeve hem, a border at the hem or a contrasting dupatta. Our guides to piping and trims and matching dupatta and trouser colours show the options. A co-ord is simpler still: top and trousers in one flag colour, with a scarf in a second. It is neater to use the colours than the flag itself, so leave flag prints and emblems to the bunting.

For an abaya, most women keep the body black or white and place the colour where it moves: the cuffs, the front opening, a lining that shows as you walk, or the scarf worn with it. We make abayas to measure, with our fabric or yours. Trims, linings and embellishment are things to ask for in your quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design. See custom abayas and our guide to made-to-measure abayas for the UAE. If you prefer a Western shape, our shirt dress comes in emerald green and black among its colours.

Dressing for early December

Early December is the pleasant season in the UAE: warm, dry days and cooler evenings, with a breeze by the water. Lawn, cambric and light cotton are right for daytime events outdoors. For a night by the sea or in the desert, add a shawl in one of the flag colours or choose a slightly heavier fabric. Offices and malls stay air-conditioned all year, so full sleeves are comfortable indoors. Our UAE winter outfits guide goes further.

Describing a colour so the shade comes out right

Red and green are the two that go wrong. On a screen, flag red can drift towards maroon or orange and flag green towards olive, mint or bottle green, and colours can look slightly different from photographs in any case, because of lighting, cameras and screens. A small difference in shade is normal and is not a fault, so if a close match matters to you, say so before the quote is agreed, and help us aim:

  • Name the shade in plain words: a clear, bright red, not maroon; a strong mid-green like the flag, not olive.
  • Send a daylight photo of something in the right colour, placed next to a sheet of white paper.
  • Say which colour matters most, and whether a near match will do for the accents.
  • Decide whether white means bright white, ivory or cream. All three work with the flag colours, but mixing them in one outfit can look accidental.

Ordering in time for 2 December

We cut and stitch in Pakistan and courier to the UAE, and everything is agreed online and in writing. The UAE page explains delivery, and the customisation page for the UAE shows what can be changed on our designs. Quotes for the UAE are issued in USD, EUR or GBP, as you choose, and include delivery and any import duties, taxes and customs or courier fees. Production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time is extra, so send your enquiry in good time: request a quote for the UAE and put the date in the notes.

Common questions

What colours do you wear for UAE National Day?

Red, green, white and black, the four colours of the UAE flag. Most outfits use one as the base, usually white or black, and one or two of the others as accents.

Can an abaya be made in the flag colours?

Abayas are made to measure, and coloured trims, linings or panels are things to ask for in your quote. We confirm what is possible on the fabric and design before anything is agreed. Many women keep the abaya black or white and add colour at the cuffs or the front edge.

Do residents from other countries dress up for National Day?

Yes. Residents of every nationality take part, at work, at school and at public events. Wearing the colours is the usual way to join in, and it is neater to use the colours than to wear the flag itself.
