US dress size to UK size: add four, so a US 12 is a UK 16. The bust, waist and hips in inches behind each UK size on our form, and where the rule breaks down.

A US 12 is a UK 16, on paper

The usual conversion is to add four: a US 12 is a UK 16, a US 8 is a UK 12 and a US 4 is a UK 8. On our size chart, a UK 16 is drawn for a bust of about 40 inches, a waist of 33 and hips of 43, which is 101, 84 and 109 cm.

That matters because the standard sizes on our quote form are UK sizes, from UK 6 to UK 24. It is a starting point, not a promise about the US 12 hanging in your wardrobe, which may have been cut on quite different numbers. A size is a label and inches are facts, so your own measurements decide what we cut.

Where the add-four rule breaks

The rule converts one label into another. It cannot tell you how a particular American brand cut the garment, and these are the usual ways it goes wrong.

Vanity sizing: many American labels have become more generous over the years while keeping the same number, so one brand’s 12 can measure like another’s 14. The label still converts to UK 16; your tape may say UK 14 or UK 18.
W sizes: a 16W is cut fuller than a regular 16, so do not convert it as if the W were not there.
Juniors: odd numbers such as 5, 7 and 9 belong to a separate, slimmer range and do not map neatly onto UK women’s sizes.
Petite and tall: a P or T describes length, not width. A 12P is still a 12 around, and made to measure handles length separately through your own kameez, sleeve and trouser lengths.
Letter sizes: S, M and L each cover about two numbered sizes and vary most of all between brands.

Check yourself in five minutes

Measure your bust at its fullest, your natural waist and the fullest part of your hips, in inches, over the underwear you will wear with the outfit. Then find the line above that comes closest. It is common for the three numbers to land on two or even three different lines. That is not a mistake; it is the reason made to measure exists. The form has a “Between sizes” option for exactly this, though entering the measurements themselves is better.

Ordering from the US with a size or with measurements

On the form, choose “Use a standard UK size” and pick the nearest one, and we confirm the key measurements with you before cutting; or choose “Enter my measurements” and type them in inches. The second route takes about ten minutes with a soft tape and gives a closer result, because a kameez also depends on your shoulder width, your sleeve length and the length you like, none of which a dress size knows. What is a US size 8 in inches?

By the usual conversion a US 8 is a UK 12, which on our chart means a bust of about 36 inches, a waist of 29 and hips of 39. American brands vary, so measure yourself and compare before relying on it.

Is a Canadian size 12 the same as a US 12?

Canadian shops mostly use American numbering, so a Canadian 12 is treated like a US 12 and converts to a UK 16. As everywhere, brands cut differently, so your measurements are the safer guide.

Which size do I pick if my bust and hips match different sizes?
