UK cotton lawn vs Pakistani lawn: are they the same?
Is cotton lawn the same as Pakistani lawn? The cloth is, the way it is sold is not. Width, print scale and how many metres a kameez needs off a British roll.
InspirationThe same cloth, sold two different ways
Yes, in the sense that matters: British cotton lawn and Pakistani lawn are the same kind of cloth, a fine, lightweight, plain-weave cotton with a smooth, cool surface. A kameez cut from good dressmaking lawn bought in the UK wears much like one cut from a Pakistani lawn suit. What differs is how the fabric is designed and sold. British lawn comes off a roll by the metre with an all-over print, while Pakistani lawn is usually sold as a cut suit length with the print planned around a kameez.
That difference changes how much you buy and what you still have to find, so it is worth understanding before you order three metres of something lovely. Our lawn guide covers the fabric itself.
How the two compare
Five points are worth checking.
- Fineness: both come in a range. The well-known British printed lawns, Tana Lawn among them, are prized for a silky, closely woven feel, and Pakistani lawn runs from light everyday qualities to premium ones. Judge the piece in front of you, not the country: it should feel smooth, not papery, and drape, not stand stiff.
- Sheerness: pale lawn from either source can show what is underneath. Hold a single layer over your hand; if you can see your skin tone clearly, plan a lining. Our guide to when a kameez needs lining explains the options.
- Width: British dressmaking lawn is commonly sold at around 135 to 150 cm wide, although narrower rolls of about 112 cm exist. Pakistani suit pieces vary by brand and are often narrower, so read the label or the listing.
- Print scale: British lawns are typically printed with small repeating designs, florals above all, that run the same along the whole roll. Pakistani lawn suits are engineered: a front panel, a back, sleeves and often hem borders, with a dupatta and trouser cloth designed to go with them.
- How it is sold: off the roll in any length you ask for, against a pack of fixed lengths for a kameez, trousers and a dupatta.
How many metres a kameez needs at the wider width
Our working figure is about 2.5 metres for a straight, knee-length kameez on cloth 114 cm (45 inches) wide. On lawn 135 to 150 cm wide, the front and back can often be cut side by side, so the same kameez commonly needs about 2 metres. Allow more in these cases:
- A long or flared kameez: calf length, an A-line or extra flare can take 2.5 metres or more even on wide cloth.
- Larger sizes: once the pieces no longer sit side by side, the length needed goes back up.
- One-way prints: if every flower grows upwards, every piece must be cut facing the same way, which wastes more.
- Trousers in the same lawn: these need their own length, and a shalwar takes more than straight trousers.
What a roll of lawn does not give you
A Pakistani suit pack arrives as an outfit in waiting. Buying off the roll, you plan the rest yourself. Trousers are the first decision: lawn can be thin for a lower half, so many people choose plain cotton or cambric in a colour taken from the print. A dupatta is the second: British fabric shops rarely sell one to match, so a ready-made chiffon or voile dupatta, or about 2.5 metres of a soft plain fabric, fills the gap.
There are no embroidered neckline pieces or borders either, so the interest has to come from the cut and the finish. If you would like lace or embroidery added, ask for it in your quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design. In return, small all-over prints are forgiving to cut, with no panels to place. Our guides to buying fabric by the metre and fabric widths go further.
Having British lawn stitched
With Stitching Only, you send suitable fabric to us in Pakistan and the finished outfit is shipped back to you, so there are two separate shipping stages. Before you post anything, send daylight photos with the width and the length, and we confirm that the fabric suits the design, how much is needed and how to send it. The UK Stitching Only page and the UK page explain the details.
Production takes 5 to 7 working days once the quote is approved and paid in full and your fabric has reached us; shipping time is separate. When you have your fabric details, ask for a Stitching Only quote.
Common questions
Is Tana Lawn suitable for a salwar kameez?
As a fabric, yes: a fine, smooth printed cotton lawn works well for a summer kameez or kurta. Check the width on the listing, buy enough for your size and length, and plan plain trousers and a dupatta separately, because it is sold by the metre and not as a suit.
Can I buy Pakistani lawn by the metre in the UK?
It is mostly sold as unstitched suit packs, in shops and online, and less often off the roll. Either form can be stitched: send photos and the lengths, and we confirm it is suitable before you post it.
