V-neck or round neck: which suits you better?

V neck vs round neck kurti: a V adds length to a round face, short neck or fuller bust, while a round neck softens and covers. A quick way to choose between them.

The quick answer

Choose a V-neck when you want to add length: it suits a round face, a shorter neck, a fuller bust and broad shoulders. Choose a round neck when you want softness and cover: it suits a long face, a long neck, a smaller bust and narrow shoulders, and it sits quietly under a dupatta. Neither is more flattering in general. Each one corrects in a different direction, so the right one depends on what you would like to balance.

Feature by feature

Most of us are a mix: a round face with a long neck, say, or narrow shoulders with a fuller bust. Pick the feature you notice most in the mirror and choose for that one.

  • Round or full face: V-neck. The point draws a vertical line under the chin, which lengthens the face. A high round neck repeats the curve.
  • Long or angular face: round neck. The curve softens and adds a little width. A deep V stretches a long face further.
  • Short neck: V-neck, because it shows more skin below the chin and makes the neck seem longer. A high round neck closes that space up.
  • Long neck: round neck, cut fairly high, which fills the space gracefully.
  • Fuller bust: V-neck. It divides the chest into two smaller areas. A high round neck leaves one unbroken expanse of fabric, which makes the bust look larger.
  • Smaller bust: round neck, or a shallow V. A deep V can look empty.
  • Broad shoulders: V-neck, which pulls the eye inwards and down.
  • Narrow or sloping shoulders: a wider round neck adds a horizontal line across the top.

Depth matters more than the name

A deep, narrow round neck does much of what a V does, and a tiny V that stops just below the collarbone behaves like a round neck. So before you worry about the shape, decide how low you want the neckline to sit, and measure a kameez you like to find the number.

If you are torn, there are two good compromises. A shallow V gives some length without showing much, and a round neck with a short centre slit keeps the soft curve while adding a vertical line. The V-neck guide and the round neck guide go into depth and finishing for each.

Your dupatta, fabric and embroidery

How you dress day to day can outweigh face shape altogether.

  • Dupatta worn across the chest or over the head: the neckline is mostly hidden, so comfort decides. A round neck lies flat and needs no attention. Our guide to dupatta styles for each neckline has more.
  • No dupatta, or one worn on one shoulder: the neckline is the centrepiece, and a V shows a necklace or an embroidered edge well.
  • Bending forward a lot: a round neck stays closer to the body. A deep V can gape when you bend unless the depth is modest.
  • Soft or sheer fabric: curves are forgiving. The point of a V needs careful finishing to stay sharp in very soft cloth.
  • An embroidered neck piece from a suit pack: the embroidery is already worked to a shape, so the pack decides more than you do.
  • Sleeves: an open V balances a long sleeve, and our article on pairing necklines and sleeves lists combinations.

Choosing on the quote form

Both are standard choices with us. Under neckline on the quote form you will find “Round” and “V-neck”, along with “Advise me” if you would like a suggestion based on your fabric and the occasion. Add the front depth you want in your notes. The neckline and its depth are written into the quote before cutting, whether we supply the fabric or you send your own. Common questions

Which is more modest, a V-neck or a round neck?

A high round neck covers the most. A shallow V is nearly as modest and can be closed further with a small hook at the point. Depth, not shape, is what decides how much shows.

Does a V-neck work under a hijab?

Yes. Under a hijab the neckline is largely covered, so either works. Many people prefer a round neck or a shallow V because there is less of an edge to show through the scarf.

Which neckline helps with a double chin?

A V-neck or a round neck with a slit usually helps, because the vertical line draws the eye downwards and away from the jaw. Very high, tight necklines tend to do the opposite.
