What are bishop sleeves, and who do they suit?
Bishop sleeves are long sleeves that are full through the forearm and gathered into a cuff at the wrist. The fabrics that suit them, who they flatter and how to ask.
InspirationThe shape in two sentences
A bishop sleeve is a long sleeve that widens as it goes down the arm and is then gathered into a cuff at the wrist. It sits fairly smoothly at the shoulder, is fullest around the forearm, and the extra length blouses softly over the cuff.
Bishop, balloon, bell or puff?
Three features define a bishop sleeve: a plain or lightly eased top, growing fullness towards the wrist, and a cuff that pulls the fullness in. Change one of them and the sleeve has another name.
- Balloon sleeve: gathered at the shoulder as well as the cuff, so it is full all the way down.
- Bell sleeve: flares in a similar way but is left open at the hem, with no cuff. See bell sleeves.
- Puff sleeve: short, with the fullness gathered at the top of the arm.
- Cuffed straight sleeve: has the cuff but none of the volume.
Cuffs and fabrics that suit it
The cuff can be a narrow band with a button and loop, a deeper buttoned cuff, or a casing with elastic. A deeper cuff looks more formal and shows off the gathers above it; elastic is the easiest to push up the arm.
The sleeve depends on cloth that gathers finely and falls under its own weight. Chiffon, georgette, soft lawn, viscose, crepe and light silk all give a gentle droop above the cuff. Organza and crisp cotton hold the volume out, so the sleeve looks rounder and larger. Thick fabrics such as khaddar or velvet bunch at the cuff and feel heavy on the arm, so the fullness is usually reduced. A sheer sleeve on an opaque body is a popular combination, because the gathers show without adding bulk; our article on pairing necklines and sleeves has ideas for the neckline to go with it.
Who bishop sleeves suit
Most people can wear them. What needs adjusting is the amount of fullness.
- Fuller upper arms: the sleeve skims the upper arm without gripping it and moves attention to the wrist.
- Broad shoulders: unlike a puff sleeve, the volume sits low, away from the shoulder line.
- Petite frames: keep the fullness modest and the cuff narrow so the sleeve does not swamp you.
- Fuller hips: with your arms at your sides the widest part of the sleeve sits near hip level, so choose a softer fabric and less gather.
- Long arms: a full bishop sleeve with a deep cuff uses the length well.
Everyday practicalities
A bishop sleeve is more practical than most statement sleeves, because the cuff keeps the fabric out of the sink and off the plate. The drawbacks are that it bunches inside a slim coat sleeve and needs a little more ironing. If the shoulder or armhole is wrong the gathers will not rescue it, so the usual fit points still apply; see armhole and shoulder fit.
Measurements and how to ask
A bishop sleeve needs your usual sleeve length with a little added so that it can blouse over the cuff, your wrist measurement for the cuff, and a decision about how full it should be. It also uses more fabric than a straight sleeve.
The sleeve options named on our quote form are sleeveless, short, elbow, three-quarter, full length and bell or flared. Choose full length, write bishop sleeve in the notes and add a photo if you have one; the shape is a request, and the written quote confirms what is possible on your fabric and design. The full sleeves guide covers cuffs and wrist room. Our tiered maxi dress has a close relative, a full sleeve gathered into an elastic cuff. Common questions
Are bishop sleeves the same as balloon sleeves?
Not exactly, although shops use the names loosely. A bishop sleeve is smooth at the shoulder and full only towards the wrist. A balloon sleeve is gathered at both ends, so it is rounded along its whole length.
Can bishop sleeves be made in three-quarter length?
The classic version reaches the wrist, but the same shape can end on the forearm with a band or elastic. Ask for it with a photo and the length you want, and it is confirmed in the quote.
Do bishop sleeves need lining?
Not usually. They are often cut in a sheer fabric and left unlined so the gathers stay light, even when the body of the kameez is lined. Lining a full sleeve makes it heavier and warmer.
