What colours go with navy? Building a navy capsule
What colours go with navy? Its easiest neutral and bright partners, whether you can wear navy with black, and a small navy capsule for suits and dresses.
InspirationThe short answer
Navy goes with almost every colour. Its easiest partners are white, cream, beige, camel and grey; its liveliest are mustard, coral, rust, blush pink, emerald and maroon. Because it is dark without being stark, navy behaves like a neutral, which is why it works so well as the base of a small wardrobe.
The general methods for combining colours are in our guides to dupatta and trouser colours and tonal dressing. This article applies them to a single colour and ends with a capsule you can copy.
Navy’s partners, group by group
Each group below changes the mood of navy in a different direction.
- White and ivory. The crispest pairing: nautical with pure white, softer with ivory or cream.
- Beige, camel and tan. Warm against navy’s coolness, and the most dependable smart-casual combination.
- Grey. Quiet and professional at any depth, from dove to charcoal.
- Mustard, rust and coral. Warm accents that glow against a dark blue ground.
- Blush, powder blue and mint. Pastels look fresh instead of sugary next to navy.
- Emerald, maroon and plum. Deep with deep, rich for evenings and winter.
- Gold and silver. Both metals suit navy, so jewellery and trims are easy.
Can you wear navy with black?
Yes. The old rule against it is really a warning about near-misses: a navy so dark that it looks like a black that did not quite match. Make the difference deliberate and the two look polished together.
- Choose a navy that is clearly blue in daylight, not a blue-black.
- Change the texture: a matte navy dress with glossy black shoes, or a navy knit over black trousers.
- Repeat the black once more, in a bag, belt or hijab, so it reads as a plan.
- Or separate the two with a third colour, such as a white collar or a camel coat.
A navy capsule: two neutrals, one accent, one print
A capsule built on navy needs only four companions.
- Base: navy, in the pieces you wear most, such as a dress, a kameez or trousers.
- Light neutral: ivory or white, for trousers, a shirt or a dupatta.
- Warm neutral: beige or camel, for a second pair of trousers, a cardigan or a coat.
- Accent: one of mustard, coral, rust or blush, in a dupatta, scarf or top.
- Print: one piece whose pattern contains navy and your accent, so it ties the others together.
Putting the capsule to work
With those five, every top goes with every bottom. A navy kameez with ivory trousers and a mustard dupatta is a complete three-piece; swap in the beige trousers and the printed dupatta and it is a different outfit. A navy dress takes the camel cardigan for work and the accent scarf at the weekend. For planning a whole wardrobe this way, see the modest capsule wardrobe guide.
On a navy suit, the contrast dupatta carries the mood: ivory or powder blue for daytime calm, mustard or coral for energy, maroon or emerald with a touch of gold for evenings. Keep the trousers either matching navy or the light neutral, and let only one piece be bright. Prints on a navy ground are forgiving of marks and creases, and they pair easily when the plain pieces pick up a colour already in the print, as our guide to printed and plain pieces explains.
Having navy pieces made
Navy varies from inky to bright to slightly grey, and screens alter it further. Describe the navy you want, or send a photo taken in daylight, when you request a quote. Two of our own designs come in navy: the button-front shirt dress and the tiered maxi dress. For anything else, Fabric + Stitching means we supply an agreed fabric, with the colour confirmed in your written quote. Colours can look slightly different from photos, so allow for a small difference in shade.
Common questions
Does navy suit every skin tone?
Navy is one of the most widely flattering dark colours because it is softer than black. If it feels heavy near your face, put a lighter or brighter dupatta, scarf or collar between the navy and your skin.
What colour shoes go with a navy dress?
Tan, nude, white, silver, gold and black all work. Tan and nude lighten the outfit for daytime, while metallics and black make it dressier.
Which hijab colours go with navy?
Ivory, beige, grey, blush and powder blue are easy everyday choices, and mustard, rust or maroon add warmth. A printed hijab that includes navy ties in with any of them.
