What colours to wear with grey hair
What colours to wear with grey hair: clearer blues, soft whites, berry and teal often sit well beside silver, plus dupatta, neckline and gift ideas.
InspirationWhat changes when hair turns grey
Grey, silver and white hair are cool, light and bright, so colours that echo those qualities, such as clear blues, soft whites, berry shades, teal and jade, often sit well beside them. Many people find that greyed, muted shades like a dusty beige or khaki look flatter near the face than they used to, because they sit close to the hair colour without contrasting with it.
None of this is a rule. Plenty of people with silver hair look wonderful in camel or mustard, and the colours someone has always loved are often still the right ones. The change is simply that hair is now part of the frame around the face, and it is worth looking at colours again with that in mind.
Colours worth trying
These are starting points to hold up by a window and compare.
- Clear blues: cobalt, sapphire, cornflower and mid navy pick up the coolness of silver hair and look crisp.
- Soft whites: off-white and pearl grey look fresh without the starkness of optical white.
- Berry shades: raspberry, plum, cranberry and rose bring colour to the face and contrast gently with grey.
- Teal and jade: greens with blue in them sit comfortably between warm and cool.
- Charcoal over black: if black feels heavy, a deep charcoal or ink blue gives similar depth more softly.
- Warm favourites, adjusted: if someone loves warm colours, try clearer versions, such as coral instead of rust, or a bright mustard instead of a dusty one.
The dupatta and the neckline do most of the work
Because colour near the face matters most, the dupatta is the easiest place to experiment. A berry or teal dupatta can bring a neutral kameez to life, and a soft white chiffon dupatta lightens a deep suit. Draping it close to the neck puts the flattering colour exactly where it counts; our guide to styling a dupatta for every neckline shows how.
The neckline shape matters too. A V-neck or an open round neck shows more of the colour of the kameez around the face, while a band collar frames it more tightly. Embroidery at the neckline in a silver or pearl thread can echo silver hair beautifully.
Choosing for a mother or relative
If you are ordering for someone else, look at recent photos of them and notice which colours make them look most rested and like themselves. Ask what they enjoy wearing now rather than relying on what they wore years ago. Middle shades such as teal, plum and mid navy are the lowest risk, as explained in colours that suit almost everyone.
Comfort matters as much as colour, so think about sleeve length, kameez length and fabric weight as well. For measurements, a kameez that already fits them can be used as a guide; see sending a sample kameez. Then request a quote with the colour, a reference photo and your notes. The custom stitching page explains the rest, and the colour and design are agreed in your written quote before anything is cut.
Common questions
Can you wear grey clothes with grey hair?
Yes. A grey outfit with grey hair can look very elegant, especially with a contrasting dupatta, a deeper grey than the hair, or some colour in the jewellery or embroidery.
Is beige a bad colour with silver hair?
Not bad, but some muted beiges blend into silver hair. A creamier or warmer beige, or a bright accent near the face, usually solves it.
Do warm colours still work once hair goes grey?
Often, yes. Clearer, brighter versions of warm colours, such as coral or a bright mustard, tend to sit better beside silver than dusty ones.
