What if you do not like your custom outfit?

What if I do not like my custom dress? If it was made as agreed, that is not a fault and it cannot be returned. What you can still do, and how to avoid it next time.

The straight answer

If your custom outfit was made to the design and measurements you agreed, and you simply do not like it, that is not a fault, and with us it cannot be returned for a refund. A piece cut for one person cannot be sold to another, so a change of heart after making rests with the customer. It is an uncomfortable rule, and it is better to hear it before you order than after.

That does not leave you with nothing to do. First make sure it really is a matter of taste and not a mistake. Then there are several ways to rescue a piece you are unsure about, and a few habits that make this much less likely next time.

Dislike or mistake? Check before deciding

Open your written quote beside the outfit and compare them line by line: neckline, sleeve style and length, kameez length, trouser style, lining, and each measurement taken on the garment laid flat. Two outcomes are possible.

  • It differs from the quote. Then the error is on our side. We put it right by correcting or remaking the piece without charge for the work, as long as you tell us no later than 7 days after delivery; the postage both ways is paid by you. Our guide on what to do if an outfit does not match your order explains how to report it.
  • It matches the quote. Then it was made as agreed, and what you are feeling is a change of mind about the design, the colour or the ease you chose. A shade that looks a little different from a screen photo also falls here, because a small difference in shade is not a fault.

What you can still do with it

If the piece matches the quote, these are your practical options.

  • Give it a fair trial. Press it, wear the shoes and underlayers you planned, and look in daylight. Clothes straight out of a parcel rarely look their finest.
  • Change what goes with it. A kameez that feels plain may come alive with different trousers or a contrasting dupatta. See matching dupatta and trouser colours.
  • Have a small adjustment made near home. We do not alter existing clothes, but a tailor in your area can shorten a hem, narrow a sleeve or add a modesty panel to a neckline. Our note on when an alteration is not worth it helps you judge.
  • Order a revised piece. If you now know exactly what you wanted, ask us to quote a new piece with those changes as a new order.
  • Pass it on. A sister, cousin or friend of similar size may love what you do not.

Why it happens

Disappointment with a correctly made outfit nearly always traces back to one of four gaps between the picture in your head and the words in the brief.

  • The reference was a mood, not a design. A photo of a model in soft evening light sells a feeling. The garment has to be described in seams, lengths and fabric.
  • The fabric was wrong for the shape. A flared cut in a stiff cloth stands away from the body; the same cut in chiffon falls. See how fabric changes fit and drape.
  • The ease was never discussed. “Fitted” and “relaxed” mean different things to different people.
  • A detail was assumed. Neck depth, sleeve opening and slit height are the usual culprits.

Preventing it at the brief stage

Nearly all of the avoiding happens before you approve the quote. If you are sending your own idea, the Send Your Design page explains what to include, and the design form is where it starts.

  • Send one clear reference and say which parts you want copied, and which you do not.
  • State lengths as numbers, measured on a garment you already like wearing.
  • Describe how close you want it to sit, or point to a piece you own.
  • Give the colour in words and add a daylight photo if the shade matters.
  • Read the written summary slowly before approving. Anything not written down has not been agreed. The design approval page lists what to check.
  • Raise second thoughts before cutting. A paid order cancelled before cutting is refunded minus the cost of any fabric already bought for it; once cutting has started there is no refund. Whether a change is still possible is something to ask us straight away.

Common questions

Can you return custom made clothes you do not like?

Not with us, if the piece was made as agreed. Made-to-measure clothing is cut for one person and cannot be resold. If it does not match the agreed measurements or design, that is different: we correct or remake it without charge for the work.

Will you alter the outfit if I change my mind about the style?

We do not alter existing clothes. For a small change, a tailor near you is the practical route. For a different design, ask us to quote a new piece.

What if I realise I dislike the design before it is made?

Tell us at once. A paid order cancelled before cutting is refunded minus the cost of any fabric already bought for it, and nothing is deducted for fabric on Stitching Only. After cutting has started there is no refund.
